I am pretty new to Photoshop (heck i'm using Photoshop 5). I'm looking to upgrade but am unsure what to get. Elements 6 is only $100.00, but is it a watered down version? Would I be much better off going with CS3?
Unless you plan on downloading it illegally, I don't believe you can purchase anything but CS3 any more. And downloading is rather frowned upon around here.
If you're just starting, 5.0 isn't all that bad a version. But if you can afford CS3, then go for it. My best tip would be to find a student who has a discount to use for it. At the art institute where I'm going, our student discount drops it from about $2,000 to $250.

More liek posted warez is. I'd be impressed if the statistics of people on DD who Bought photoshop withe their own money were even 1 in 1000 people. @_@
But then shelling out a thousand bucks for something to make a webcomic with doesn't appeal to all.
Even the GIMP is more capable than PS elements. Elements is missing both the pen tool and layer masks, among other things that can often be vital to design. I purchased CS3 with a student discount, and I have to say it's pretty fancy.
I considered using Elements when i switch (partly) to PC very soon, as I don't want to pay for Photoshop again, but I played with my mom's copy while visiting her recently, and even the most basic everyday stuff that I use was missing. Very disappointing. And the overall presentation of the program is not geared towards creative use. Bleah... As far as doing anything with your comic-- I'd say forget elements.
Find a way to afford CS3-- If you're a student (or you have a student in you family, a lot of those discounts are good from pre-school through grad school) there are good places you can get discounted stuff online. There's a whole online store dedicated to it, I think. Google "Academic Discounts." Or you could maybe get an older version on the cheap off of ebay. I use CS at home and CS2 at work, and I'm very happy with both, so it might be something worth looking into.
Yep... PHOTOSHOP not ELEMENTS.... search your feelings, you know it to be true!
