Hello There!

I'm having a little trouble lettering my comics, more precisly, the making of balloons. I'm making them in PS, but generally, I find it a little unweildy.

Hello! Another option is this thread. I used it to get started with my speech bubbles - I'm not great at it yet, but there are wonderful tips in there specifically for PhotoShop.

These are some cool tutorials, but I noticed none of them offer how to do curved tails. The straight tails are fine for the most part in word balloons, but they kind of amaturish, at least that what letterer's tell me. Not saying that's bad, but if possible, I like curved tails.

If you don't already, you could figure out word bubbles before you draw a page. Work out how big a panel will need to be to fit in all the text and the drawings. That way you won't have to squish the bubbles and text to avoid covering up your art.

1, Use the circle creating tool on a new layer, drag an oval around your text... I call these layers 'b1', b2, etc.
2, Edit/Stroke... I use 5 pixels as the size.
3, Pen tool... one click on the new oval, click near mouth of speaking character, then back on oval, add another point on each line, hold down command key, click and drag until you get a nice curved tail.
4, set brush tool at same size as you stroked the oval.
5, Paths window, click on 'stroke'(little circle).
6, erase the bit of circle, then fill with white or a colour.

If you have a look at my signature picture you will see that you can do quite complex balloons with nice curves in your tails and joins this way.
