I believe this is a known bug, but so far I've only seen people complaining of it happening to edited comic pages. I just want to point out it happens to uploaded files as well.

For those who do not know what I am talking about, if you upload a file (or comic page), then re-upload the file with changes (OR edit your comic page), sometimes the server hiccups or something and reverts your file back to its previous, unedited state. Which sucks ducks. Pun intended!

I was having the problem, but when i force refreshed (shift+F5) it seemed to work after a while.

Actually, I was using a file in one of my template designs, so I was shift-reloading every 5 minutes. It actually did update to the changed file... for about 2-3 hours. Before reverting back to the unchanged file again when I was doing a few final checks. I'm very anal-retentively meticulous about checking this kind of stuff. ;-)

As a side note, I thought of another reason it could happen. If DD is spread out over several servers (like Fanfiction.net for example), then it could be that one or two of the servers is not updating at the same time as the rest of the servers, so there is an "old copy" of the files sometimes randomly displayed when the non-updated servers kick in. Just a thought.

Also, I replaced it again, it updated again, and then ... hmm, maybe it was more like 10 hours now, it reverted back to the original file, again. Like it's falling back on an old server cache or something, and I have to be lucky enough to get my updated file updated at the same time that the server takes a "new" cache. Theoretically I could get my watch out and time for when it "refreshes" to the old file.

Seems to be reverting and then re-reverting avatars as well. I've been trying to upload a new one for a few days now with no avail. Surely this all can't be because of an image server. And if it is, how can the server be so poorly maintained?

but yes i am having this problem too only with comic banners.
I deleted the file entirely, and reloaded a new one... it didn't work at all with my first .jpg file... then i tried a .png and it seemed to work...but no. keeps reverting back.

My avatar changed three times today, on it's own. It started out as my Joker-In-Jail avatar, and then switched to a Chi-Joker one Midge28 made me. Now it's the Bruce Willis avatar I had uploaded about a month ago, and from what I hear from other people it was the Anon default for most of the day.

This is dumbfoundingly bad, guys. Please let Volte know.

Usually with avatars, I load the new one up about 50 times.
It usually prevents it from being TOO screwy...

My shit has been going haywire for three days straight now. It won't settle on just one of four avatars. Each time I log on it's a different one, between my Joker in Jail avatar, Chi Joker, Bruce Willis, and Anon.

Something is very wrong with the image server if your avatar system is this fucked. Seriously.

Add me to the list with comic title image problems. I thought I was going batty for a minute there.

So there's no use in re-uploading the correct image?

Oh there's an easy way to fix title images.

Simply make your own template, get rid of the comic title image tag and replace it with a simple HTML image tag - put your own pic there the old fashioned way ^_^

Ozone, the (really very small) problem with that is that the title image code that the site generates if you use the tags includes a link back to the Homepage (should you have that activated). Because there's no variable that automatically links back to the homepage outside of the "comic title", unless you hard-code it in yourself there's no way to get from your comic page back to your home page.

Not that it's really all that difficult to hard code a solid URL in there yourself, just some people who aren't too savvy at HTML might think it's already a bit too much work. FYI!

Gah! So I have to remember html? I guess it'll have to wait until I have the time to sit down and do the whole page, then. Which may be soon, but won't be now.

Also--the thumbnail for my other comic is working intermittently as well D:

yea, i'd also like to know ^^ ...
is this being worked on? can we expect this bug to be exterminated sometime soon?
and also, since when does this bug occur?
surely it can't have been there since the beginning of DD.

there are ways to get around it by exchanging the name of the file, but its very annoying nevertheless...

This is an issue that affects all images uploaded to the site. It even affects HTML files that you upload, though not as often. It probably affects text files and stylesheets too, though I haven't tested it with those.

Usually it can be fixed by bypassing your browser's cache, but I have had cases where it reverts to the previous image.

If you don't know how to bypass your browser's cache, it's usually Shift + anything that causes the page to reload.

That doesn't work in my case, I've done it several times. The images are still reverting. Please fix this.

just something to help, I've noticed that (For avatars, at least) that the server will save so many of the same file type, meaning if you've uploaded a PNG avatar before, Another PNG recently, And just uploaded another one, it will switch between them at random. So, if you load a GIF or JPEG, it won't show the PNG anymore. But, if you've uploaded avatars under that file type before, it will do the same thing, just with that file type.

You know, this is starting to get VERY annoying. I'd kind of like to be able to fix the pages that have typos on them, but I can't do anything. Why hasn't this been fixed yet? Is ANYONE working on it?

HOT TIP!
I found a relatively simple way to get around this little problem (FOR NOW!!!). If you want to upload a corrected page that won't revert back, all you have to do is change the file extension. So instead of filename.jpg, change it to filename.jpeg. I just did it, and it fixed a page without any fuss.

BUT MAKE SURE YOU DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME! Otherwise, if you make a mistake, you'll be faced with the same problem all over again.

This also works with avatars. If you're having trouble with the GIF format, I suggest changing the file extension to PNG, JPG, or whatever. It should then upload without incident.

Thanks for the tip, very helpful.

I'm just going to put out an opinion here, that I'd have rather have had this really huge farkin' bug fixed than a brand spanking new front page design, but that's just me.

Yes, you did point that out, and my trick is certainly derivative of your discover. However, I don't think anyone else had deduced, as I did, that the server was identifying the files by their extension. Therefore, it was worth mentioning that you could switch the extension of a JPG file to JPEG to get around the bug.

It's basically a way to lie to the server by making it think that it's a different file type when it actually isn't.

There's no good workaround. Just tell your viewers to bypass the cache to make sure they are viewing the most recent image.
