I remember back in the day; when secret characters made sense; well Soul Calibur is back and taking another step in the; not so conventional direction. These new characters make almost as much sense as Spawn did in Soul Calibur II; or KOS-MOS in SCIII.
Darth Vader - PS3
Yoda - Xbox 360
Not only do these characters look out of place, but they fighting with light sabers. So unless this is KOTOR then your technically going to just cut through the sword. Before they annouced that the characters would be system exclusives I was excited to play Darth Vader; but no ammount of Soul Calibur could convince me to by a PS3, so it looks like I'm stuck with Yoda.
I remember reading about this earlier and being a little unsettled by it for while, but after thinking about it, I started to feel like it's not really a big deal, and the characters might be fun to use.
For starters, the Soul Calibur story is already silly. That's kind of the case with a lot of fighting games... It's just a weak makeshift story used as an excuse to bring that set of fighters together.
Second, we already had Spawn and Link pay these guys a visit. I'm starting to think of the game in more of a Smash Bros. sense. Who cares how the characters got there, but they're there. Lets' fight! Of course I would think they went too far if they suddenly announced the new characters Pac-Man, Wolverine, and Oprah.
One thing that disappoints me is that we can't pit Yoda against Vader. (although they're possibly saying that you can buy the character that didn't come on your system. booo.)
2nd: The next person I hear say "No matter how awesome this game is for the PS3, I won't buy it. You know, despite the fact that the only semi-legitimate complaint for it is not having enough good games. But no, having these last 26 games that I've said I'm not buying the system just for this one game out of the 26 I just mentioned JUST ISN'T ENOUGH!" is going to cause me to buy one of Lefarce's "Punch over the internet" devices.
Goddammnit, can't we have anyone say anything negative about the PS3 without you taking it as a personal insult??
Aaaaaaanyway, I think that this whole "plugging seemingly random characters into a fighting game" thing is basically a gimmick to trick people into buying the game. I'm sure there are plenty of Star Wars fans who could care less about Soul Calibur picking up these games just to play as Vader in a decent fighting game for a change.
All in all, though, although I think it's a fairly shallow move, there's nothing wrong with it. Assuming the characters aren't horribly unbalanced, the game should proceed just fine, and likely Darth and/or Yoda aren't going to screw up the storyline, since they'll probably be appearing in a "non-canon" capacity. Neat little unlockables like this are always fun, but it can really screw with the fanbase if they try to integrate it into the actual story.

Goddammit, can't something good happen with the PS3 without someone saying "HURFDURFPS3SUX"?
I'm sick of it Inky. I really fucking am. Every time I try to enjoy my fun new thing I've heard of, half the idiots on the internet have to jump on it. It's just starting to grate on my nerves a bit.
One of the commenter said something that IMO made a lot of sense. If they're gonna go thru the trouble of getting the license for 2 SW characters, why don't they just make a SW fighting game based on the SC engine, and make everybody happy?
Unless there is actually a good SW fighting game out there.

Yeah, even when it came out, it got bad reviews. It was a dent in the shiny polished armor of Lucasarts, that's for sure. Luckily we have KOTOR, Lego SW, and Battlefront (among many, many others) to remind us why Lucasarts is the sh*t.
I just hope the game isn't as broken as Soul Calibur 3. Hopefully someone knows what i'm talking about when i say "Guard + Down, down". More than like Yoda's gonna be broken character due to the fact that he's so damn short. He's gonna be hard to hit i'm sure. And that my friends is GOING to get exploited.
Theres a Distinct difference between something being HOT shit... and hot SHIT!

None of which were actually developed by Lucasarts. KOTOR was Bioware, Lego Star Wars was Traveller's Tales, and Battlefront was Pandemic. Lucasarts used to make some great games back in the day. Then they started to suck something fierce. Now they farm out their IPs to third parties and take the credit.
hmm...I can see it in my head. there's kilik, in his vest and tites. now comes in Darth Vader.look at kilik, it's so funny watching him barely leave a dent in Darth Vader's armor. now look, Darth Vader cut Kilik's head off, such fun...
I wonder how someone convinced me to go outside. I have a sunburn now. :'(
