I have seen some artists do this before in their comic or as just a regular pic, but it seem like a great combo. But I have tried it before and it just don't feel right. With smudging ( both finger and stump) and with out.
I also tried a darker ( well softer) pencil, like 6B and up. It just smudges on me.
I have found out about inking with a Prismacolor Black pencil. This artist who does that ( you can find out who he is in my profile ) shades with reg pencil, with out smudging and then tones in photoshop. It looks neat.

So you any of you have any input and advice about how to do this or what to use?

I've been experimenting a bit in my manga-comic. If you skim thru my pages, you can see that I first tried Faber Castell black/grey markers. But they're not as good as say Copic markers, and so I eventually started weeding out the markers for use in backgrounds, and started using pencils more and more for the characters - for the fine work.

I still have to figure out the right balance for combining both markers and pencil shading on the same page.

I'm definitely sticking with my markers for all background work. Because to pencil *everything* like Mayshing would really cause a lot of smudging no matter how careful you are.

My pencil shading doesn't smudge at all. Probably because it's not the majority of my page.

If you're going to use a non-eraseable black pencil, I figure you might as well just ink... You get so much more control over fine linework. Poster art is more suited to PB pencils... comics art involve lots of small panels with small fine pictures (in my case), so I need the fine sharp lines.

A mechanical pencil and any pen with a .01 to .005 nib size works for me. On the rare occasion I actually mess with paper. Most of the time I just pencil and ink in Manga studio. Works fine enough for me so far. Least I'd like to think so.

It's a good technique, it really just depends on how fast you can do it. I tend to move very slowly when working with paper, but digitally I move quite a bit quicker. So the speed up in production time is the big payoff for me.
