A sprite comic is a webcomic that uses computer sprites, often taken from video games, for significant portions of their artwork.

(The soap opera webcomic about nothing in particular.)

Well, don't forget, sprite comics characters are also sometimes made by the artist themselves.

Updates Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday's (depends).

Most importantly, sprite comics are the cause of much drama and nitpicking about what does and doesn't constitute "art" on these forums. That's all I really know about them.

Sprite comics are comics made by copying and pasting certain images on a picture plain that were either created or not created by the aritst, because fo this ALOT of them are unoriginal. Very rarely (Like, as rare as seeing a Panda in America that isn't in a zoo) will you see a comic with ALL sprites 100% created by the user themselves.

There are several main reasons why sprite comics are not respected:

1. Many consider the fact that the author did not draw the sprites themselves to be tantamount to plagiarism. Even if the author draws 99 other sprites himself, if he even uses 1 sprite from an existing game, it's still plagiarism.

2. Many consider pixelated pictures to be ugly. As modern games leave pixelation behind in the dust, many won't tolerate it in comics either.

3. Many consider the use of sprites to make a comic to be an inflexible technique incapable of advanced comics storytelling.

4. As a result of the above, most serious authors do not use sprites for comics. This leaves the medium in the hands of an extremely disproportionate number of beginners, children, and hacks. They ruin what little reputation the genre has left.

P.S. 99.9% of these beginners, children, and hacks (over)use sprites from 3 games that nobody plays anymore.

I know. It's just that a) I think arguing about it is a waste of time that the people who have the arguments should be spending making better comics and b) it gets tiring reading the same argument for the umpteenth time. It's like the quasi-daily "omg why is there so much crappy Anime fanart here" threads on dA. It's not like anyone's holding a gun to your head and forcing you to read this stuff.

And yeah, I know, I'm not being forced to read threads about them at gunpoint either, I'm just sayin' - I understand a lot of the reasons why people don't like them but getting all worked up about it?

I'm not worked up over it. It's just that a large part of answering "Please help me understand what sprite comics are all about" is understanding why sprite comics are ridiculed in many webcomics circles.

So I summarized it for the original poster without making sprite jokes.
