Now that the first DD Awards ceremony is over I think it would be useful to discuss what went right, what went wrong and what can be improved for the next one!
To start I'll say this thing needed more advertisement, it should heve been presented on the front page permanently, I think some people who don't frecuent the forums didn't even notice this was going on... this could have been much bigger!
About the categories, there were some that didn't get many attention from the voters (like best backgrounds...)
I agree about the voting and advertisement stuff. If it had its own button beside games at the top of every DD page, it would've been a bigger event. I'd also add that more categories are needed. Not sure what, but we've got a year to brainstorm stuff. I'd say more genre awards off the top of my head.
Yeah... The main problem I had this year was that it just wasn't advertised very much at all. (I didn't even know they were going on until someone PMed me and congratulated me on being nominated!) I think I saw one line in a news post about it on the front page, and that's basically all. Sub put way too much work into it to have it be as un-announced as it was. : (
I've said this before, but I think that Drama and Noir should be two different categories. The comics that got nominated seemed to be more noir. When I think of drama, I think of serous comics in a mostly real life setting, so perhaps that was what the Real Life category was for, I dunno. Either way, I agree that the awards need more publicity and genre categories.
As others said DD Awards needs more publicity.
I think the banner sponsor ad next to the drunkduck logo could be used. I know they used it for the DD Civil War event why not the DD Awards? (Unless a non DD head paid for the civil war ad but I doubt it.)
I like the idea of picking things off of a list for the contest nominations like Buzzcomix list or webcomic list but that might be really tough. (Don't know anything about coding.) I made a huge mistake in the 07 nomination process and got the web addresses wrong in most of my nominations.
A multiple choice click question would be nice for the voting instead of the ol copy and paste.
If there is another DD awards, you should make sure there's a presenter for each category. I didn't really care much, but a lack of a presenter could hurt someone else's feelings and make them feel less important.
I don't understand why it was all done outside the site aside from some news mentions. It should be more integrated with the main site, IMO. And more dramatic. Far more dramatic. Like maybe you should only announce winners of each category once a day. Building it up till it finally reaches best comic/strip.
The voting system was very difficult to navigate.
Plus the fact if your new to the site and not familiar with the comics, having them linked may have been of help. A brief description of the nominated comics would have been helpful as well. I would also recommend more categories because the ones selected as some have commented are very limiting and there are many comics which cross genres. The DD awards is a great idea and a lot of fun. And definitely look forward to this next years production!
Sub did a great job as it was though. In the end it was basically him driving the whole thing. The award wasn't considered completely "official" though, so it didn't get a lot of support from DD... It was one of those things.
If we wanted something official we'd still be waiting for it, and Sub waited as long as he could before going ahead.

This is a really good idea. I think the comic artist drawing the pages for the awards gave it a great feel to it. I, like many people did not know that this was going on. I think the format is good. I hope that drunkduck jumps behind this idea more. Maybe have an official team for this. I would definitely be on board to officially work this out.
Seriously: I didn't know about it until I googled it because I was bored. I vaguely remember trying to use the voting system but it didn't function well, if memory serves and I couldn't vote. Bad coding I think.
I don't remember having any problems with it last year (appart from most of the people I voted for not winning XD ). I'd love for there to be another one this year too and if there's anyway I could help just let me know.

I really didn't have a problem with it either. I enjoyed working on one of the presentations. I'd be willing to help with this years awards if it happens.
Hi, guys! I'm currently working on some delicious delicious coding for nomination purposes. May take me a while, but I think once that's done/figured out, we can get this off the ground.
That being said, we should probably think about finalizing categories. I have a gigantic list that I pulled from the previous awards and from the threads where people suggested categories.
I was also thinking that we should have something that excludes comics on hiatus or that haven't updated in a couple months or specified amount of time.
But yeah. This is totally do-able. If people are interested, I'll post the massive list of categories I have, and we can work on paring it down.
Hi AWC -
We elected NOT to break the categories into comic story vs strip. Ultimately, the categories were general enough that there wasn't an issue. (Besides, a lot of people miscategorize their comics.)
Definitely something that can be discussed for 2009's version, to be sure!
Oh, sure, I totally understand! The categories kept everything pretty neatly separated. I think it worked out really well - but again, everything will be up for discussion come summertime. Hope to have you aboard for the process!
