You've battled for hours against that last boss, and finally he's fallen. It's been a long journey, and at times frustrating, but you keep going to beat the game and see how the story ties up. But when you finally get there, rather than a lavish ending sequence, or even a satisfying denoument, it just ends with a simple "I'm glad that's all over" (or something to that effect). Sure, some games over do it (MGS2?), what's the most dissatisfying game-ending you've ever seen?
For me it has to be Oni, which has the most depressingly bleak ending ever, which lasts about a minute and makes no sense. Or maybe the "secret" ending to Jak and Daxter, that you get for finding all the orbs.
There is one ending that was the biggest, biggest disappointment ever. They say that Halo 2's ending was the best disappointing ending, but those people are wrong. Sega's Shenmue 2 has quite possibly the worst ending ever. After being immersed in Ryo's world, doing what he does, seeing the story unfold in his eyes, we are treated to the worst ending one company could possibly provide. A "to be continued" sequence that cuts off exactly at the moment of revelation. Make matters worse, the story was actually good. Sega has no intentions to release Shenmue 3
The ending to Indigo Prophecy felt like a cop-out. The ending to San Andreas was quite possibly the weakest ending in the GTA compared to GTA3. The Matrix: Path of Neo had a horrible nonsensical ending. Hell, it actually made me miss the 3rd Matrix's ending.

in that, once you hit level 255, it loops back to 1. (and yes, i HAVE tried this.)
how to really beat Gauntlet II:
1) eject cartridge
2) open front door
3) huck game into traffic
4) close door
5) have a sandwich.

i'm being sarcastic. i think i'm dissatisfied with most video game endings. Nothing can warrant the frustration of some games (such as Ninja Gaiden, Halo 2, etc.) and then you get a quick cutscene and a list of asian dudes that just wasted your time. I guess i just want a check or a goddamn thank you from Miyamoto or something--or something similar to the movie The Last Starfighter, where i'm picked up and recruited to fight in space...based on my prowess for playing video games.
I'unno, if i was to choose one right now....Illusion of Gaia. That game was freakin lackluster, after a quick 8 hour playthrough.

Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories. All the ending is, is a picture of Sora going to sleep. C'mon. And that was the hardest KH game for me. I'd say that was a dissappointment. Especially after Riku Replica 5, Marluxia's clone, Axel, Larxene and all the other hard bosses in that game.

come on it wasnt that hard. you just got to have a lot of finger dexterity and know how to dodge. any way personaly i liked the halo 2 ending but the other day i herd that in jappan they got so mad they literaly chucked the controller at the screen. psi ops had a bad ending but then agin the story line thrughout sucked. only reason i played was cause the game was fun as hell
I was quite angry about SoulReaver's ending. After you do the big fight, the bad guy jumps into a time warp and you follow him and then it's a 'to be continued!' sort of thing. Always a good marketing move to have your game leave a bitter taste in someone's mouth.
Chrono Cross's "bad ending". Sure there are a ridiculous number of different endings, but before you know what to do to unlock those, just beating the last boss the traditional way gives you a non-ending, where the credits just start to roll.
Ditto to the Snake King. I also want to say Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening. Mostly I just really didn't like the design of the Wind Fish when he finally hatched out of his giant Yoshi egg.

I felt really sorry for The Wanderer in Shadow of the Colossus. Even though he never said anything, he felt very real to me. Like a real human being. And at the same time, faerytale-like.
But what I'm really disappointed over is that the NA version of the game took out the secret mountain-climbing path up to the Secret Garden! I kept trying and trying! If it wasn't for their unfair blocking of the secret path, I would've climbed up to the top no sweat!!!
I wanted to pet the deer and rabbits, dammit!!!!

You put 20 hours worth of leveling up to get to the last planet and when all's said and done, you're treated to a lame dialogue sequence that is easily missed.
The Ending left me feeling empty. After all those hours of playtime, all I get is an ending that redefines the word "cliche"?
I agree, FFIX was very disappointing. If they'd left it how you think it'd ended it would've been so much more poignant, but NO. They had to have a HAPPY ending. Also, the fact that the last-last boss has nothing to do with anything... You beat Kuja and then have to fight some random death god outta the blue? What the hell was that?!?

Time Crisis. Eurgh. Flying away on a helicopter? That's pretty lame.
That reminds me of the ending to Contra. After making cardiac meat out of the final alien boss all you do is jump into a helicopter and fly away as the island blows up...
I thought Robotech Battlecry had a very depressing ending. I mean... you finally beat the last boss in that game and you still end up dead...

YES!!! I guess the ending was nice, all moody and stuff but it kinda made the whole game loose it meaning to me.. you've spent all that time trying NOT to die just to end up dead anyway...bläh -.-
Evil is always possible, Goodness is a difficulty.
FFIX is a brilliant game, whether you like the ending or not. And I liked the ending, so I believe you are wrong. Have that girly moron as the final boss would have sucked, the fact the final boss is a gigantic creature is a plus in my books.
I'm sure if you actually listened in the game, you would know who it is and why you were eliminating it.
You know what's funny about all this though? We really should be playing games because of the game, not because of what we get after we're done. If the game is fun enough, I don't care what comes at the end. Contra and Time Crisis are two good examples.
That being said, a good ending is fun no matter how much you enjoyed the game before it.
My first really disappointing ending was Rampage for the NES. It took me all evening to thrash my way through the United States. Eventually it became a chore just to play the game, because it stopped being fun after 10 levels. Finally it finished and I basically got a "Congratulations". The end.
Jurassic Park for the SNES. My friend and I spent a whole evening on it and played late into the night. We even had to pause it and reconvene in the morning. When we beat it a helicopter picked us up and we got some end credits with NO music. Again, the game was not very fun and we were beating it just to beat it.
I really liked Shenmue's ending. I felt it was really inspirational, like the end of the beginning rather than the ending. Nothing wrong with that.
Yeah, I liked Shenmue's ending. If the series ended right there, I wouldn't mind since it really didn't leave you hanging, it just faded off with Ryo on a ship.

Oh, no, I'm not saying it's not a great game. It blows both VII and VIII right outta the water. I can't believe it gets such a bad press just 'cos it's packed to the gills with Moogles. XD
I just found the ending a bit of a cop-out. It started bittersweet, and I got all choked up and then - WHAT? I don't like having my emotions cheaply manipulated like that. >o<
Oh, I was paying attention. And Necron seemed to me like the developers going at the last minute, "Hey, you know what? People might not like having that crossdressing freak as the last boss. Let's stick in something Lovecraftian with cheap status attacks for kicks." If you disagree, that's fine, but I don't see how it had anything to do with the rest of the plot. (I did think Kuja was one step too far into 'bishie badguy' territory, like they were trying too hard to have a Big Bad more effeminate than Sephy. I agree there. XD)

That link leads to a site so enlightening and hilarious... thank you...
Haha, I wasted so much of my A Level study time just reading through that site, looking at the examples and nodding furiously... Everyone thought I was going crazy. XD

The Star Ocean 'till the end of time ending I thought was disapointing...
I mean, they all wen't on to have normal lives! it was kinda boring....
I wanted all of them to die! D':
