Got this news off of another forum. Yep, the fastest thing alive meets the slowest genre alive. Although I can't say I've never thought of the possibilities of this happening. I just wish they'd use the Archie Comic/SatAM canon instead of the recent characters.
Normally I'd be pretty skepticle about a Sonic rpg, but then again I played and loved the Megaman X rpg on the ps2, so here's hoping that Bioware delivers!
The way I see it, the things they've been doing with Sonic lately haven't been working, so I think it's good for them to be working "outside of the box" a little more with their games. They did a lot to improve gameplay in Sonic and the Secret Rings, though a few of the old glitches (and a few new ones) still plagued the game. It'd certainly be odd to play a Sonic rpg, but hey, it worked for Mario.
Yeah, should we really be worried that they're going to tarnish Sonic's name even more? I guess we can only wait and see what happens. Super Mario RPG was pretty good. But then, they had good developers working on it.
I hope your talking about a different one, because I am thinking of the SNES version with eye splitting graphics and terrible gameplay. One of Squares low points I dare say.
I played it on my Xbox the other day on one of my random ROM searches and I looked at it and wanted to vomit violently. I also found a game called BlackMageMario, essentially Mario, but its a black mage. Odd really.
For it's time it was a great game. And it was also the birth of some concepts that make Mario RPGs famous today such as timed attacks, interactive battles, humorous plot-lines, and platforming elements. Without Super Mario RPG we probably wouldn't have Paper Mario or even Mario & Luigi. The game itself wasn't amazing, but it was probably one of the most innovative turn based RPGs out there at the time.

That's the very same game I'm talking about, and I maintain that it was a good game. Those graphics weren't eye-splitting in the SNES days, and the gameplay was a lot more fun than most RPGs at the time. As a matter of fact, I'll take a light-hearted plumber with timed jump attacks over a spiky-haired angsty effeminate RPG clone any day.
Back to Sonic though, I think if Bioware remembers to have the game not take itself to seriously, it will be a lot more fun. This was a problem with many of the past Sonic games.

I'm thinking some might have meant the "Paper" variety. Then again, those were fun because they still had plenty of mario action. I can only guess what this one will be like. Then again, it might be fun to have boss-fights happen on high-speed stages, like the elevator boss from FFVII or that dragon thing from FFX.
If they can figure out why Paper Mario was so fun for a mario RPG, then there might be some hope, as long as they don't try to make another Command Mission (Say what you want, it felt like an FFX ripoff). The original Sonics did have high-speed, but it also required you to explore the stage a bunch to find everything, which is a VERY important RPG element.
I still get a poor vibe from it, though, and when I get a poor vibe from a game it seldom ends up being good...
I'm just hopeing they do some sort of branching storyline style like they did with KOTOR. Being able to affect the plot/characters even in subtle ways adds a layer of coolness to the whole experience.
Well, Sonic has always been about the branching plot-lines. Even as early as Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (or was it 2?) You could play as either Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles and get different views or results from the same basic storyline. And they didn't even use text.
