Sometimes a comic is featured that has sexual themes and has a thumbnail to match and you have no option but to have it on your screen because it's on DD's main page. I'm all for sexual themes and content in comics - do whatever you want - but I'd just prefer to know it's coming and would like to choose to see it, not be forced on to it by a thumbnail... as I'm sure parent's of minors would too.
Today, I didn't know one was coming. I visited the DD homepage (as shown below) to show my Mother-in-Law my PG comic strip (and avoid my T+ comic, lol). She's a prude and I was tip-toeing on the internet so she didn't think I was a pervert by having a bunch of sex chat ads or boobies everywhere on the sites I visit. Unfair and lame, but that's the nature of mother-in-laws sometimes - you gotta try to impress them or their daughter will get a tongue lashing. Well, I got to the DD homepage and there was Craving Control's giant boobies right there and my Mom-in-Law said "oh my".
Now, I'm not hating on CC - I have it favorited and I think it's a lovely comic... and I'm happy for their success. But, I'd really like to see a different icon if displayed on the main page and an effort by DD not to feature comics with thumbs like that (or at least encourage featured comics with thumbs like that to change icons to a more family friendly thumbnail) - for the same reason you'd sensor it for children. I know the "Most Read Strips is automated", but still, it seems like more people than me may have noticed it and a quick fix to message its author and ask them to change it. 10 year olds are on this site - the least we could do is make boobies spilling out of small tops ONE CLICK away instead of on the main page, right?
Just my suggestion... do as you will with it. But, I think DD has a policy of trying to protect minors from mature content and I think this thumb is a good example of something that would fall under that effort. Maybe I'm being a tad prudish myself... but I think that this particular thumb is more than just a girl with a big chest - it's an effort to sell sex since only the bust (and a massive, spilling over bust) is the only thing in the picture.
Have her read the comic, that comic isn't intended for sexual scenes, it's infact humorous and funny and about a lady with large breasts who has a craving problem (Carrot Cake). And there's nothing wrong with the human body and all of it's parts BUT if you are really stressed out and stuff we should make a section for erotica only.
A header next to Strips and story's saying "Adult Comics" which have nudity and sexual scenes in them or mass gore and stuff like that.
That way the guys/girls who like to FAP to that stuff won't have to hassle through the search engine...And The children with nosey parents will block the 18+ or older stuff.
You guys are missing the point. The point isn't that her comic is sexual or dirty or anything like that... it's the fact that the thumbnail appears on the main page by default (the thumbnail in the image above) when you are or are not logged in and it is obviously sexual in nature.
Don't argue that THAT thumbnail isn't meant to be "selling sex". The only thing in the picture are giant boobs spilling out of a top. If it were a full-body shot, you could perhaps argue that it isn't selling sex. But it's obvious that THAT thumbnail is.
The point is that if you're on the main page, I'd suggest that DD enforce a policy that would shield minor's from content like that... which as you can see from my image, isn't currently a policy in practice... or perhaps at the very least, a more loose policy than what I'd personally deem as "protecting minors from sexual content". And given DD's recent attempt to cover heavy content with warning thumbs and to put labeling on comics' thumbs would indicate to me that protecting minors from obvious attempts to promote via sexual desirable images is something they'd be all for.
Just my suggestion. Not a debate I'm trying to start.
This is nothing new though, I've seen a lot of comics trying, and succeeding, to raise the comics popularity by having some kind of half-nude themed thumbnail. "Grog" and "Elijah and Azuu" are just two examples.
"Craving Control" is the latest and perhaps the most crude example of selling a comic with half naked women. The sad part is that we all KNOW that it works. I'm willing to gamble that the popularity for "craving control" has gone threw the roof since that thumbnail was added. The author may deny it but it's a obvious selling point and boobs sell.
Personally I'm not offended by half-naked chicks and boobs on the front page but, yeah, it's tacky.
I think it's important to note that when reconjsh says featured comics, he doesn't mean the admin Featured Comics. Just the automated top comics.
I agree that it's tacky, but there's nothing too sexual about a pair of clothed boobs. Yes, it's a visual advertisement with an overt sexual idea, but they're decently clothed and nothing worse than what you might see on a walk to the grocery store. If the boobs were naked, then yeah, we'd have to have them change it.
I think we might follow the ratings here:
E
EVERYBODY. Open to everybody. Non-offensive material in text or imagery. Apropriate for children to adults.
T
Content is suitable for teens or older. Mild violence, slightly mature themes. No obscenities, graphic violence, sex, or nudity.
M
13 and older only. Content contains mature themes not suitable for children. May contain occasional obscenities, limited graphic violence, implied sex, mild nudity. No sexually explicit material, no graphic sexual acts, no Hentai, no unrelenting violence, or non-stop obscenities.
A
18+ Logged In. Content is sexually explicit, exceedingly violent, or an excess use of obscenities.
A picture of boobs is a T, to me... there's no 'graphic sex', and not anything that is restricted normally so it should be ok theoretically for a thumbnail. It is kinda tacky and obvious but really, they are just boobs. Someone that easily offended by a plunging neckline has better websites to be on than one for webcomics.
I agree that it's not exactly what I would label as "tasteful", but I don't think it's bad enough that it needs to be censored. ^ Like they said, at least the boobs are clothed, mostly. It's nothing worse than what you'd see in a Victoria's Secret commercial. If I can turn on my TV in the middle of the day or walk down the street and see a billboard with something similar on it, I don't think it's offensive enough to warrant censoring it.
"lothar" Said: you guys are all forgeting that kids LOVE boobs !
They sure do.
In fact i predict that in 5,35 months EVERYONE on DrunkDuck will use boobs as a way to sell their comic. We are talking boob thumbnails all over man!
while i personaly do not like useing sex to sell things its really not all that big a deal. sure its not the most decent thing that the comic could use as its thumb nail but the whole argument that kids visit this page is kind of underminded by the fact that all a child has to do is type in "porn" in the browser to be instantly bombarded by images and viruses.
