| usedbooks | Like Mike, Mina started out as an extra to fill out a trio. I drew three miscellaneous college kids to visit the bookstore and become hostages. The first I designed was Daniel and then I drew the two coeds (because all mohawk liberal college boys have a female ensemble ;-) ). The names all came from the top of my head. Mina’s infatuation with Mike was an afterthought. (I have so many afterthoughts. Someday, I hope to have a forethought...) When Mike started acting emo (as he always does), I decided it would be cute if one of the girls called him cool. I decided it should be the one with fewer piercings. (I’m SO glad I made that call!) Mike hasn’t known any kids his own age aside from Alex, so I thought it would be neat to have him interact with peers and draw his attention away from Seiko. Plus, this encounter allowed me to get Mike turned away from the thug image and enroll in college.
Mina’s history (and actually Ms. Taney’s history) was also a spur of the moment decision. I wanted to have Mina’s parents (mom or dad or grandparent) pick her up in the next chapter and thought it would be cute if Kaida already knew them. I realized then that every character in my early chapters had become recurring except for Ms. Taney, and she seemed to be a good age to have a daughter in college, so I brought her in. As usual, my train of thought lost control, and the Taneys gained a very detailed history (which also provided me a method to reveal Mike Sr.’s history).
A final note on Mina. When I wrote the scenes with Meredith and afterwards, I was seriously planning on making Mina a backstabbing creep (perhaps her father’s influence). I deliberately left her involvement in question because I hadn’t decided where I wanted to take her character. In the end, my sympathy got the better of me. I couldn’t do that to Mike. -Posted on Jun 10, 2009 |

It's not deliberate, I swear. ^_^; Often, I write what feels most natural, and nothing has naturally developed yet. I tried before and failed. I was going to have Kaida go out with Toyo and Yuki with Tristan, but I ended up going in very different directions...
Btw, that's another reason I didn't have Mina turn traitor. I figured it was about time for a relationship to not end in disaster.

Used Books has almost passed a year in comic time now. Time does skip a lot in this story, which is why we miss the minor life things like Yuki's dating (and she does date frequently) except for when it turns sour. Mike had also been seeing Mina regularly until Meredith attacked him. We didn't see any of the "happy stuff" because it wasn't plot-worthy.
(I'm not sure how you define "main cast." The MAIN cast to me is either limited to only the three ladies or extended to to, um, there it gets fuzzy.) -Posted on Jun 11, 2009 | | User: JustNoPoint | | | | Not so long, maybe it's the quotes that made your post seem longer ;-) -Posted on Jun 11, 2009 | | User: JustNoPoint | | | Oh I know that you have married characters and a few in relations. I meant more akin to the main cast ^^
Even if they are based off ppl in real life that don't or wouldn't date much I think these characters have lived and are living much different lives. With so many fairly suitable guys coming into their lives... my only gripe is it that sometimes romance seems to be pushed aside to simply make the audience want it more.
Though I do have to take consideration that this is also a webcomic medium and 700+ pages still does not give accurate time to form such relationships. In episodic form you may have envisioned Seiko finally overcoming her social handicap... but it may take a season or 2 for her to go on an official date.
700 pages would probably be about 10-14 episodes only XD
As for relations in DLP, heh I barely had time to fit character development at all. Let alone romance ^^; All that explosive stuff took place in 3 days! And Fenny is in a long distant relationship.

*now let's see how long MY post is heh -Posted on Jun 11, 2009 | | User: usedbooks | | | | Holy crap. I didn't realize that post was so long. o_0 -Posted on Jun 10, 2009 | | User: usedbooks | | | QUOTE: If I can do that to Sally I could do that to Mike ^^
Emotional pain sucks way more than physical pain (and yes, Sally had that too, but so has Mike). Just giving Mike a break for a change. I feel I torment him way too often. I'm already sending him into the next battle (yes battle... it's coming) with a broken left hand and a badly wounded right wrist.
QUOTE: At these ages they can't ALL be so awkward or ruined for relations can they? =p The ladies can. ~_^ They were originally based on me and my friends. Gael and I have never dated. Gael never plans or wants to. Bethany has never dated seriously. (She flirts with random guys, and once brought home a guy from the busstop for pizza.) But, this is fiction, so I decided to be more generous to Yuki and Seiko than life is to me and Bethany.
QUOTE: Though you should finally put some characters into some legit relationships. And no, Kaida/Raidon does not count XD: There are. ~_^ Ricky and Brigit are happily married. Mike and Mina will be fine if they ever see each other again. Toyo and Celes had a decent relationship. Sean and Kylie are unspoken but I feel like they have a good relationship. I've never considered Alex much, but I always assume he has girlfriends off and on. Yuki dates regularly, but nothing long term. It still counts for something. Nearly all of them had past relationships (excluding Seiko who drowned herself in studies and never learned how to socialize).
I do have plans for Seiko dating. Oh, and Violet. A few others, perhaps. If Mike makes it to college, he'll have lots of normal, healthy socializing.
Writing romance is foreign territory for me, even harder than fight scenes. ^_^; -- Oh, and happy relationships are boring. :-P
(*Trying not to mention complete lack of romantic relationships, legit or otherwise, in DLP.* XD Although Sally did get at least one date in, so she beat Seiko by, like, ten years.) -Posted on Jun 10, 2009 | | User: JustNoPoint | | 5 | It may be the hot pink she always wears but she's kinda hot :P I could see why Mike would fall for her unintentional traps so often.
