| usedbooks | In chapter 6, I needed some suspects for Ricky’s poisoning, so I came up with the Hardings' household staff, a maid and a chef. That was the extent of their purpose. Each appeared on one page.
After seeing funeral episodes on a number of shows one week, I had the urge to draw a funeral. I wanted it to be fairly commonplace, so it seemed like a Harding event. I considered a grandparent or uncle for the role of "the stiff," but that wasn't fun or interesting. I wanted to use a character I had already introduced and someone whom at least one of my ladies met. Of course, I wouldn't dream of breaking up the lovely family by offing a parent or Caroline, so I turned to the hired help. The maid was a more interesting and fun character; I didn't want her to die (it would have been too depressing for my intentions). Carter had no personality, and since he was younger, it could add a touch of intrigue, so he was the one to get the ax.
During all this brainstorming, I also solved a conundrum that had been bothering me for quite a while with no solution in sight. I wanted to include some flashback scenes of secret rendezvous, but the people involved lost their memories. I wanted some means to reveal it to other characters without resorting to completely unprovoked memory recovery. Plus I wanted to inform others before informing the memory losers. Anyway, a third party witness was the perfect solution. One who was dead was even better. My first thought was to record these events in Carter's diaries, but I decided to get rid of those to cast doubt on Carter's "natural" death. Instead, my mind hit upon the whimsy of undeveloped film, something that could be overlooked by anyone trying to erase the past and likely forgotten by Carter himself.
So, Carter was a very minor character, but a very useful plot device. -Posted on Apr 03, 2009 |

| User: usedbooks | | | | Ah, I get it now. Yes. Used Books was originally going to be a series of whodunits, but I couldn't bring myself to kill anyone. So my early chapters play out like murder mysteries -- without the murders. ;) -Posted on Apr 03, 2009 | | User: JustNoPoint | | | QUOTE: I'm not sure what you're referring to. You mean the thing on the cruise?
Yup.
Reminds me of one of those "Who did it?" stories. Since you made had the maid, the butler, etc :P

Same here. But I am a bit hard on myself at times with inspiration and ripping off.
But ah well, many story lines I do are built like that. "I want to take that premise and do something totally different from it!" -Posted on Apr 03, 2009 | | User: usedbooks | | | QUOTE: It feels like there is a word missing or something... or before informing? the memory losers?
Whoops! Yes, informing. Shame on me for being cute rather than saying I wanted Yuki to find out before Kaida. XD

I am inspired by TV and literature a lot, but I've never come close to copying anything (at the very least, I recombine unrelated things XD). Mrs. Taney's chapter was essentially a combination of three unrelated Case Closed episodes.
Brigit is pregnant only because I saw a few things with pregnant women in them and never drew one myself, so I wanted to, and Brigit was the only reasonable choice.

I know how useful they are ;-)
This really does sound like that very same mystery murder play Seiko and Yuki was a part in. You can tell that you've been reading a LOT of mystery stories!
I wonder if the last thing he said to his killer was "Hey, what's cooking?" -sorry-sorry-
It's nice to know other people get these urges to write things they see on tv. I always feel like I'm just ripping things off when I get those ideas. Then later I find out I ripped stuff off unintentionally with my "original" ideas too and just say screw it. ~Everything's been done, I'll just have fun XD
BTW this line doesn't make sense to me. I guess your reading is making you too smart to read what you write :P
