| usedbooks | Toyo has been a great method for revealing Fudo’s heroic/fun-loving side, but the character was actually invented long before Fudo. I planned in the very early pages that a plump and jovial former safe-cracker would visit and have a great rapport with Kaida. Yuki would like him despite his record (one of the “good” criminals). Each time there was a “ding” it was going to be Toyo, but I ended up drawing someone else. Tristan, Fudo, and Celes all appeared instead of Toyo, and in the meantime, I fleshed out his personality and some history and story role
When I finally introduced Toyo, my plan for him was as a love interest for Kaida (I felt bad that both Yuki and Seiko had some degree of romantic story, but Kaida had no romantic plot), but he changed my plans for both him and Fudo. He left Kaida with no love interest -- at least not until Toyo was out of the way and Kaida received Raidon’s attention. (I had fun writing Toyo’s interactions with just-released Raidon. Nah. Just for the really main, most oft recurring ones. Most of the lesser characters don't have good color images from the comic (and many never will). I'll replace Meredith's with a color one in a couple weeks. ;-)

Heh. Might be true for any lady in this comic... Toyo is just a friend, though.
