Raidon was invented for a flashback. I drew a gang of three and wrote names beside them (Raidon, Meredith, and Nick -- never called by name in the comic). I intended him to exist only to show Kaida and Fudo’s criminal origins, but I liked him so much that I had to bring him back.

Aside from shoving Kaida one time, Raidon has not raised a hand to any of the characters, but he is loathed more than all the confirmed murderers in the comic. His personality is partly inspired by Professor Moriarty (the unimpeachable member of society; Holmes is seen as a villain to accuse him, etc.). Whenever I write for Raidon, I think along the lines of "This guy is selfish, manipulative, unsympathetic, and gets what he wants -- but he has to appear generous, compassionate, and humble." It was somewhat tricky to get the hang of writing for him because I needed him to be good at looking like a "good guy" but have my readers hate him. I think Meredith helps me achieve that. Since she is very obvious in her cruelty, her fear and obedience to Raidon helps emphasize his true nature.

Raidon (meaning a thunder god) was one of the names I considered for Fudo, so it was an easy choice when I made this character. The name Yamamura has two origins, an annoying, bumbling cop in Detective Conan, and a semi-villainous lady in Get Backers (episode 2, I think). Raidon’s appearance is essentially a combination of Lupin III and Kagato (from Tenchi Muyo). Nothing says "evil with decorum" like a pince-nez!

Semi-spoiler: Raidon is not THE villain of this story. We have already hinted at the idea of *his* boss (the only one Yuki couldn't catch) and his being seen as a weak link in the syndicate.

@patrick
I must confess I had a bit of a crush on Lex in the "Lois and Clark" series (before he lost his hair anyway). Yeah, he was BAD, but there was something about him...

I like Raidon as a villain a lot. He's got a great chess-master sort of vibe to him. Every time something goes down and he shows up there's just the unshakable sense that he planned it somehow. Though one thing I will say is that although he hasn't raised a hand against anyone really he's quite happy to order one of his underlings to do it for him. It reminds me of an old Superman cartoon when Lex Luther is wanting to dispose of someone, "I abhor violence, *she's* going to kill you."

I win! XD And yet, you're the one with a paycheck. Hmm...

That's the fun thing about him. He has "good" qualities, but somehow that are completely not endearing on him. He's generous and does help people. That's not an act. He really *is* that way. He rarely lies and does act differently in public than in private, but both are "the real him." -- One might even argue that his romantic/concerned/jealous stuff with Kaida is more true to him, and his tough, cold "mob boss" side is an act... That's sorta what the other syndicate leaders thought, and why he was treading a dangerous line in the syndicate.

Meredith just scares me o_o

Hehe. As she should. ~_^ I'll do her profile next, but not for a few days, since I'll be going out of town.

Raidon is just a great great SNAKE. As such it actually makes sense he's not the top. Generally the snake works for somebody.

He's easy to hate because you can see a trace of him behind nearly every atrocious thing that occurs. With almost no endearing qualities. Y'know... besides being a perfect gentlemen and all. But we KNOW how much we really hate perfect goodie good guys too XD

Meredith just scares me o_o
