I wanted a really devious villain with all the traits of other devious villains I loved to hate. Fudo was a combination of Gin (from Detective Conan) and Akabane (from Get Backers). Since Kaida used guns, I wanted Fudo to use knives, and I asked my friend Gael what was scarier one special knife or lots of throwing knives -- we decided on both. Fudo was originally going to be a semi-regular recurring terror (like Murdoch in MacGyver), and Seiko’s compassion toward him was meant to be unfounded and naïve. As time passed and I wrote flashbacks, I became fond of the guy and already had the feeling that he was changing. Rather than battle this trend so I could keep my scary villain, I (as usual) went with the flow and let him evolve as he chose. In fact, I brought a scarier evil (Raidon) out of dormancy just for the sake of this evolution. -- When you lose one evil, you must replace it with a greater evil. ;-) I also changed his appearance in accordance to his personality. He has distinctly different hairstyles in flashbacks, and recently, I let him put on some weight and lose the prominent cheekbones. I’ve also been drawing him with his coat open and often without his hat. Subtle appearance changes are great for emphasizing character development.

My design for Fudo was not originally one my friends and I would call attractive, but his creation suddenly made my friend Gael think blond guys with cleft chins are sexy.

Many of the traits I originally intended for Fudo ended up split between Raidon and Meredith -- he was intended to be a plotter and a sadist sicko. Now, I figure those were just traits he attached to himself from his psychological problems.

I did almost kill Fudo off, but I was also cheering for him -- not to succeed but to escape.

Now Raidon... he's a manipulator. That's someone that's much easier to want to see fail.

Raidon is a bit more fun to play with as a villain because he's not the so obviously violent, universally loathed guy. I am delighted by the fact that my readers call him a murderer when he technically hasn't killed anyone in this story (but so many of the "good guys" have).

QUOTE:
"F*** yeah, Fudo. Get him!"

Hehe. Yeah, it's conflict enough that Fudo's life was screwed over by the syndicate guys, and you just want to see some major vengeance. Unlike the other screwed over characters, Fudo could actually deliver.

I think one of my best ideas for this story was to set Raidon and Fudo up as romantic rivals. Business is business, but when guys are fighting over a girl, things can get nasty very quickly.

It's hard to keep a good villain out of the spotlight! Especially the "I just want to kill you" types. For some reason you always want to know what drove them this far. To be this focused.

Now Raidon... he's a manipulator. That's someone that's much easier to want to see fail. Fudo is one of those characters that keeps trying to kill the main cast and when he has to fight a badguy like Raidon you just want to see him mop the floor with him.

"F*** yeah, Fudo. Get him!"

btw, I happen to be one of those Fudo fans as well if you can't tell :P

It was really fun drawing him as Eric in Off Hours. I liked his personality there as well.
