| usedbooks | Orphans and only children are overdone in fiction (what? Don't look at me like that!), so I decided fairly early on that Kaida needed one or two siblings. I amused myself with the thought of a twin sister. The baby brother idea came later, partly when I nixed the idea of Alex as a delinquent thief but still wanted to have that scene. I loved the thought of someone trying to be a thief but too clumsy and moral to pull it off -- someone who wanted to be the romanticized thief of fiction. Later, Tristan’s romantic ideals and hidden talents made him reminiscent of Takagi, my favorite character from Detective Conan. Tristan is also somewhat like me. I once wanted to be like the hero from movies and books. I used to make big romantic gestures to boys I had a crush on. These failed miserably, and I gave up. The endearing thing about Tristan is that he fails, but continues trying.
Tristan's physical design was completely accidental. When I settled down to draw him, I flipped back in my story and realized the guy on page 1 looked a lot like Kaida, and using him as Kaida's brother was just too amusing to pass up. That character was designed to look "pretty" (almost bishonen) for the sake of distracting Yuki. Once I settled on using this character as Tristan, I decided he would be the perfect love interest for Yuki -- until my friend Bethany showed no interest in him at all. (I decided to grab a nameless "extra" from another page to fill this role). Since Tristan was such a tormented romantic, I didn't want to leave him without a romantic pursuit, so eventually, he ended up enthralled by the only one available, the relationship-fearing, unfeminine, Seiko. (This too was accidental. I inserted some unfounded jealousy to show Mike’s "dark side," and later that jealousy became founded.) In short, Tristan has been rewriting my story from day one.
I chose the name Tristan from the contact list in the biology graduate office where I worked. I used that list for many character names (Jerry, Tim, Michael, Kylie, etc.) They have no special meaning. -Posted on Mar 16, 2009 |

I was going to do a thing with Meredith taking advantage of Tristan's chivalry/romance thing earlier but nixed it for two reasons: 1) Way too creepy. 2) Tristan was already too attached to Seiko at that point. (When I planned it, he was not yet past the point of no return, but when the story got to that point, he was.) -Posted on Mar 17, 2009 | | User: JustNoPoint | | 5 | Tristan's romantic side is like mine. Clinging to chivalry and being a compassionate gentleman even when nothing in the world seems to want you to do such.

Me too... but with girls :P
Though I didn't fully give up. I just made it so it took a really specific type of girl for me to be attracted to now. When I find them, well, I still make huge romantic gestures and fail haha
But now I try to use them as experience and motivation for my stories.
Tristan and Seiko's pairing is one of my favorite parts of the story. Sooner or later they will have to deal with it (I hope anyway)
That will really change things. Cause they'll get together, or won't be able to really be around each other.
I guess they can still be friends but it would be even more awkward for them than it is now! Unless one or the other could actually find a different romantic partner. -Posted on Mar 17, 2009 | | User: usedbooks | | | Maybe so...
(The name "Verona" came from The Sims 2 computer game. ;-) ) -Posted on Mar 17, 2009 | | User: Tantz Aerine | | | | Given than Tristan is a romantic hero, it would seem fate was guiding you to that rolodex. Or paper. XD -Posted on Mar 17, 2009 |
