After I told my brother about my characters and premise, he said I needed a male character. My plan for Alex was to have him become a fixture at the bookstore, basically just hanging around in the background as the "token male." Originally, I wanted to introduce him as a teenage thug who tried to rob the store but got caught, and the ladies helped him go straight, but then I decided to make him a decent, hard-working well-off scholar (the thief and "thug going straight" roles were later taken by Tristan and Mike).

Alex is the easiest character to write because his behavior and thoughts most closely echo my own. He is even a middle child, like myself. Whenever he is in the story, I simply need to ask what *I* would do. Keep in mind that he wasn’t intended as an avatar of myself or anything, just the down-to-earth guy. Alex's design is partly inspired by Tenchi (sans the Juraian rattail), who is a good representation of a typical, good-intentioned school boy (despite the fact that he’s part alien, heh).

Since Alex is the youngest of the regular cast (so has parents to answer to) and somehow always ends up getting roughed up more than anyone else whenever I do put him in the story, he doesn't get included very often.

Lol. That's the only "harem" anime I ever watched -- and it was my brother's thing. Tenchi Universe was my favorite because I loved Kiyone and Mihioshi. Kiyone was like the sane person in the crazy world and never had a thing for Tenchi. (However, Kagato in Tenchi Muyo was the coolest villain ever. When I see a pince-nez, I think of him.)

Actually, I never watched much until I found Case Closed. All I knew of anime was Sailor Moon (my sister watched it) and later Tenchi, which was at least better than Sailor Moon. Then Perfect Blue, which was another thing entirely (but still... yikes). I used to say "I hate anime" until I discovered there were more genres. In short, I came to appreciate anime late and not the series most anime fans like.

Man, you're going to blow through these in no time at this rate!

I have to do it while I have momentum! Soon, I'll run out of steam and leave it aside for who knows how long. I'm between chapters in UB right now, and this is helping me practice drawing.

Plus, there are lots of characters to go through. I want to do the less major ones too. (In fact, those are more important because they are the ones people can forget.) Tristan, Mike, Fudo, Violet, Celes, Toyo, Raidon, Meredith, Kylie, Sean, Tim, Ronnie, Jerry, Tucker, Misaki, Mike Sr., Mina... I think I have to argue that I'll never get through them at this rate, or any rate. -_-

Heh, the "token guy" Hanging out with those older ladies so much I bet his friends think he's some kind of lucky stud.

Then again you don't get many "normal" friends when you hang out with those 3 ladies!

I can see the Tenchi influence now. Tenchi in Tokyo was the only Tenchi I could ever get into watching for some reason.
Maybe because he actually falls for a girl or something. After Ranma (which I love) I got really tired of seeing harem animes where all these women like a guy and they don't care. (at least you could tell Ranma preferred Akane)

It's just not possible! Unless he's well...

Thanks. They are more fun than just having a page with short descriptions. (I'm also enjoying drawing these.)
