Outlined speech bubbles are not absolutely necessary in my opinion, unless of course they don't contrast with the background enough. If that ever happens, I will use a different style.
Besides, If you want nothing more out of a sprite comic than transparent speech bubbles, then look at Halo: Newbie Edition 2.
