A roller coaster ride. You here that little sentence in the entertainment industry way to often. It's used to describe everything from film to...well..roller coasters.
When I sat down to originally write and draw SoulDriver, I had literally a roller coaster in mind. The large first hill, the intensity you feel as the chains clank and the cars jerk while you make your way to the top. And that brief moment where time seems to stand still, the end of the track that disappears into nothing just before you race down the first drop at break neck speed.
So here we are. Chapter 1 was the first hill. I've had some creators mention that it felt like it belonged somewhere else in the story. I wanted it to start in that fashion, to establish certain rules and boundaries along with 5 important characters. And more importantly the rule that nothing is as it seems.
The coolest thing about web comics for me is you. Fellow readers and creators. The opportunity to post work and getting the chance to tell you what I was thinking when I created them and getting your feedback almost immediately is priceless. Thanks to everyone that's supported the book and me. You are greatly valued as readers and friends..Okay enough B.S...enjoy. Jim
Thanks Matte...Since I hand letter all my stuff, if I can tell the story without, or at least minimal, text. I will. That and I'm not as prophetic as other writers...So I'm better off keepin' my yap shut when I've got nothin' to say.
Love how simple the panels are leading to the last one. It really has a nice "atmosphere" to the page. It's great to see how much can be told with so little.
SYSLI- I'm a BIG fan of your title LOST, so prattle on all you like...and Yeah the loud quiet seems to be familiar to a lot more people than I had assumed.
The shards that seems to go beyond the limits of the page fills me with delight. It's such a simple thing but it works so well. And I don't mind the text. After all, most of my comic is text, if I didn't have that it wouldn't be anything.
I know this loud quiet. It is possibly the most horribly hearteating sound imaginable if it's used right.
And look at me now, going on and on. I'll be quiet now and wait to see what happens next.
Thanks guys..glad you made it back.
RENT- Glad you liked the page..I'm not one on expositions either. And I almost scrapped this page, feeling guilty. After being gone for 3 weeks and thinking, "man you 've been gone for 3 weeks working and all your posting as a first page is black damn panels and a little lettering." But this page along with one earlier hints at something revealed later.
GH- I was after that sound I get in my ears every now and then, a fuzzy kinda' humming sound. You're like my version of the Scarecrow in Wizard of OZ..Always glad to hear from you, man.
TOONMAN- You're the second person to catch it. Thanks for stoppinn' by.
I like this a lot more than I usually like exposition pages. It's a lot more intense than the usual "slow zoom in from a wide shot of where ever we are". And intense definitely works for this story.
