| DAJB | Bad news for anyone who likes the flashback sequences in Shades, I'm afraid. This is the last one! :(
For this sequence, I was looking for an effect similar to a 16th Century engraving. Nickel used more cross-hatching than usual and I asked Qoiri to leave the inks uncoloured. In the end, Qoiri did colour them by mistake and so he subsequently converted them to greyscale. As you can see, the final result actually looks a lot like a 16th Century lithograph, which may not be exactly what I'd had in mind, but it does look pretty damn cool!
Oh, and on the subject of the 16th Century, in the last chapter UsedBooks queried Credo's use of the word "potion". Hopefully that makes a little more sense now! -Posted on Oct 26, 2009 |

Well ... it's kind of implied, anyway! -Posted on Nov 02, 2009 | | User: thip | | | | As always, you manage to satisfy our curiosity only to make it worse ;o) What GAVE Sir John his interest in alchemy and how did he learn about 'spirit stones'. Come to think of it, how did HE become immortal...? Dammit, you're a storytelling pusher, you get us hooked on this stuff ;o) -Posted on Nov 01, 2009 | | User: DAJB | | | D0m: Yes, sir. Yes, you do! ;-)
Coyote: Yes, I quite surprised to learn (fairly recently in fact) the logical basis underlying the principles of alchemy. Far from the loony way it's usually presented, it has to do with the belief in the "perfectabilty" of all things created by God. Also (even more recently!) I learned that, in theory at least, elements can indeed be converted from one thing to another. It's just that the amount of energy needed to do it is (a) huge and (b) uneconomic. What a shame spirit stones are just a product of my fevered imagination! Oh, and you'll be seeing just what twisted Credo's mind shortly!
Ironscarf: Aaaw - bless you, sir!
Khard/Lance: Thanks! -Posted on Nov 01, 2009 | | User: D0m | | 5 | | Dammit, I need to catch up on Shades... -Posted on Oct 30, 2009 | | User: CoyoteLongshot | | 5 | | Yeah, that effect did turn out pretty nice. It's interesting to see how Credo's methods of trying to 'help people' have changed since then. Alchemy's pretty fascinating, and I think it ties in well with Shades, what with the spirit world and all. -Posted on Oct 29, 2009 | | User: Ironscarf | | 5 | | Words and pictures, in perfect harmony? Yep, that's alchemy alright! -Posted on Oct 28, 2009 | | User: khard12 | | 5 | -Posted on Oct 27, 2009 | | User: DAJB | | | Azu: Thanks. I originally had a very different backstory for Credo, but I think this one works so much better!
Stranger: Glad you like it. There's more of this flashback coming up on the very next page!
Freefall: Why, hello, Mr Drift! I didn't know you were still with us! ;-) Green is the colour we use for Credo's power when he's blasting things, so it made sense for the "spirit stones" to be the same. Colouring them here while the rest of the page is B&W seemed a nice way of giving them prominence to emphasize their significance.
Karnofski/SoItBegins/Paul/Ghost: Thanks, all! -Posted on Oct 27, 2009 | | User: AzuJOD | | 5 | | Interesting development. -Posted on Oct 26, 2009 | | User: freefall_drift | | 5 | I like the rendering effects very much.
Nice use of green just on the stones. -Posted on Oct 26, 2009 | | User: DAJB | | | Repo/Deadite/Adam: Sometimes the best results are achieved by accident!
Tantz: Heh - I'm sure they are! Although there is a slight distinction here. The powder from these stones doesn't replace a real medicine. Instead. it accompanies it, and helps the patient to believe that the real medicine will work.
The implication is that, in the present day, Credo is now using the power of spirit stones to persuade people to believe in his cause.
Trevor: Thanks! -Posted on Oct 26, 2009 | | User: Adam Black | | 5 | | Awesome. I dig it. -Posted on Oct 26, 2009 | | User: Tantz Aerine | | 5 | | Are by any chance those stones called 'placebo' in another, arcane terminology? :p -Posted on Oct 26, 2009 | | User: repoman | | 5 | | The page came out great. Nice flashback technique. -Posted on Oct 26, 2009 | | User: DAJB | | | Peipei: Yes, that's exactly the idea I was playing on here. Fortunately, for story purposes, it ties rather neatly into Credo's skills of persuasion and his fondness for mixing chemicals that we mentioned earlier. Also, being able to link the spirit world (as we have it in Shades) with Mediaeval alchemy meant everything stays on topic!
Doc: Thanks - more of this flashback to come!
Abt: Heh - don't despair just yet! We still have several months to go but, yes, I'm now counting down to the end, rather than up from the beginning! The colouring of the final full chapter (Chapter 16) is well advanced and, despite a serious injury to his thumb (more on that later!), Nickel has just finished the pencils for the short little Epilogue. It's kind of scary!
Harry/Hero: Thanks, guys! -Posted on Oct 26, 2009 | | User: Peipei | | 5 | | Added placebos? I heard that if people actually believe they'll get better from something, it'll actually trick the mind in to thinking they are really better xD. This can be a good thing :p. -Posted on Oct 26, 2009 | | User: Hero | | 5 | -Posted on Oct 26, 2009 | | User: Doctor Shadow | | 5 | | Gorgeous update and awesome flashback! -Posted on Oct 26, 2009 | | User: Abt_Nihil | | 5 | Don't tell me Shades is gonna end soon... I don't want to hear it! *lalalala*
And yes, I love the lithograph effect. -Posted on Oct 26, 2009 | | User: harryq | | 5 | -Posted on Oct 26, 2009 | | User: DAJB | | | Lem: Yeah, that Dominion, eh? Always jumping to conclusions!
Brogan: Hey, thanks!
Darius: Nope - nothing so inherently useful! A fundamental property of all fictional potions is that they must have the potential to be of use to those with evil intent. It's true - I'm sure I read it somewhere! ;-)
UsedBooks: Heh - not completely mutually exclusive perhaps ... but we have to allow Dominion his occasional moments of sarcasm. (He insists on it!) And, yes, no more flashbacks, I'm afraid. We only have two more chapters after this and we need all those pages for the finale! -Posted on Oct 26, 2009 | | User: Lemniskate | | 5 | I wonder wherefrom Dominion could get THAT idea...
It's accident-time! -Posted on Oct 26, 2009 | | User: Brogan | | 5 | -Posted on Oct 26, 2009 | | User: Darius Drake | | 5 | That sounds like a highly useful item to have in any medicine.
...is there a counter to it that stops people believeing stupid crap? -Posted on Oct 26, 2009 | | User: usedbooks | | 5 | Panel one made me laugh. So, religious people can't have jobs? XD I can see why a mercenary might think that way. His chosen "career" could conflict with some spiritual beliefs...
WHAT? No more flashbacks? :( -Posted on Oct 26, 2009 |
