| DAJB | Just in case anyone's interested in the historical background to this sequence, it's set in the 16th Century when the crown of England was being passed around between the children of Henry VIII, like a deadly game of pass-the-parcel!
The Protestant Edward VI was nine when he became king and only fifteen when he died. He was succeeded by his Catholic half-sister Mary who tried to restore England to the Catholic faith, persecuting and burning Protestants. In turn, after Mary's death, the Protestant Elizabeth I persecuted and burned Catholics. Nasty times for all concened!
Elizabeth eventually implemented measures which, although the country still had a long way to go, can be seen as marking at least the beginning of the end of religious intolerance here in dear old Blighty. Okay - history lesson over! -Posted on Nov 02, 2009 |

| User: DAJB | | | Paul: Essentially, yes. Sadly, history is full of examples of men who wanted to bring about well-meaning reforms, only to conclude that the only way to achieve it was to become just as tyrannical as the regime they were trying to replace ... or even worse!
Alana: Awful, indeed! And I bet your research never even mentioned the part played by spirit stones! ;-)
Harry: Thanks! -Posted on Nov 05, 2009 | | User: PaulEberhartd | | 5 | | Driven into suicide by religious persecutors? So essentially he became one of those he loathed? Very interesting. -Posted on Nov 04, 2009 | | User: alanajoli | | 5 | | Egads, what an awful time in history. I was just reading about it the other day while doing some poetry research. :) -Posted on Nov 04, 2009 | | User: harryq | | 5 | -Posted on Nov 04, 2009 | | User: DAJB | | | Cyberdog: Kind of like that, I suppose. Insofar as they're both stones, anyway! ;-)
Sky: Ah, spirit of turpentine ... the most powerful spirit in all the spirit realms!
Curt: Experiment away! It's all good fun!
Tantz: Yup. Considering how peaceful most religions claim to be, it's amazing how many tyrants have been able to use it as a way of persuading people to kill and be killed!
Deadite: Not a good thing at all. Such a waste of a perfectly good spirit stone!
Khard/Brogan/Ends: Thanks, guys!
Thip: Heh - it's the text book definition of martyrdom, isn't it? ;-) -Posted on Nov 04, 2009 | | User: theends | | 5 | | Great artwork! -Posted on Nov 03, 2009 | | User: cyberdog | | 5 | Spirit Stone,hmmm.... Kinda like Repoman's Endstone? Cool page, I like the flash back stuff.
CyberDog out. -Posted on Nov 03, 2009 | | User: skyangel | | 5 | | I'd like to think that potion he's drinking tasted really nice, but I can't imagine it somehow. looks more like used spirit of turpentine that's been sitting on the shelf a while. If it works, I'll def buy a bottle though! -Posted on Nov 03, 2009 | | User: BSP_Curt | | 5 | | I love gray scale stuff with splashes of color. It's something I've been wanting to experiment with. -Posted on Nov 03, 2009 | | User: Tantz Aerine | | 5 | Religion was always a means to give some justification to money motives. And power, which comes down to money motives again.
So delightfully green, that potion- in lieu of gamma rays, always use spirit stone. ;) -Posted on Nov 03, 2009 | | User: Brogan | | 5 | -Posted on Nov 02, 2009 | | User: DragonDeadite | | 5 | | That's not a good thing... -Posted on Nov 02, 2009 | | User: khard12 | | 5 | -Posted on Nov 02, 2009 | | User: thip | | | | Suiciding to immortality!?! That's bloody BRILLIANT, m'man. Take a bow, hell take a dozen, you should get a writer's reward just for that single idea ;o) -Posted on Nov 02, 2009 | | User: DAJB | | | Matt: Welcome back! Just in time, too. This flashback ends on the next page!
Abt: Hmmm - maybe they will. Or then again ...! ;-)
Albone: It could be considered extreme, I suppose. It depends on how many near misses he's had in the past, perhaps. Well, that and whether he thinks he could stand Elizabethan torture!
Ghost: Just the one?
Repo: Thanks. Part planning, part accident. The end result is cool, though, and that's all that matters, right?!
Trevor/Misfits: Thanks, guys!
Eraser: Hey, welcome!
Peipei: Well, he's hoping for death. It couldn't be worse than that, could it? Could it? ;-) -Posted on Nov 02, 2009 | | User: mattchee | | 5 | | Catching up.... informative flash back sequence! -Posted on Nov 02, 2009 | | User: Abt_Nihil | | 5 | | I reckon the soldiers outside are about to learn a lesson about faith... maybe they'll become the first "true believers"? :P -Posted on Nov 02, 2009 | | User: albone | | 5 | | Nice to see he wasn't always a tool and looking out for others. Credo going for the juice right away seemed kind of extreme but I think he had his mind made up all along to use it, just a question of when. -Posted on Nov 02, 2009 | | User: ghostrunner | | 5 | | with a bang no doubt -Posted on Nov 02, 2009 | | User: repoman | | 5 | | I love the black and white art. Great use of tone. -Posted on Nov 02, 2009 | | User: ERasER | | 5 | | oooo -Posted on Nov 02, 2009 | | User: Peipei | | 5 | | I'm almost too scared to think of what might happen after he gulps all that down D:. -Posted on Nov 02, 2009 | | User: DAJB | | | Hero: Thanks!
Azu: Hey, perhaps I should try to get a few schools to put Shades on their recommended reading lists!
SoItBegins: You're absolutely right! Which is just as well, really ... If it had worked as intended, he wouldn't be having this flashback and Shades would be one character short!
Doc: Thanks. In theory, the green was supposed to be very, very limited but it actually became more prominent on each page! The spirit stones on the first page, the powder and liquid made from the stones on this page, and ... well, you probably have a pretty good idea what's on the next!
Sinkingship: Hey, welcome to Shades! And, yeah, it's a little educational ... But not much!
Lem: Right on both counts!
Coyote: Nope. In 16th Century England your best bet was to be flexible and agree with whoever was in power!
UsedBooks: Heh - that's the problem with a flashback. You just know the guy has to survive in order to have the flashback! Oh, and this particular method has a touch of both options - swift but also painful! ;-) -Posted on Nov 02, 2009 | | User: Hero | | 5 | -Posted on Nov 02, 2009 | | User: AzuJOD | | 5 | | Well, now I've learnt some 16th Century British history. Cool! -Posted on Nov 02, 2009 | | User: SoItBegins | | 5 | | Let me guess: the potion didn't work as intended. -Posted on Nov 02, 2009 | | User: Doctor Shadow | | 5 | | Great work dude, also, I love the black and white with splashes of colour. -Posted on Nov 02, 2009 | | User: sinkingship | | 5 | | Wowsers. Educational too! -Posted on Nov 02, 2009 | | User: Lemniskate | | 5 | | Swift and painful for sure. -Posted on Nov 02, 2009 | | User: CoyoteLongshot | | 5 | | So what you're saying is that it was your best bet not to be Christian at all in 16th century England. But I guess they'd burn you for that too. Hmm. -Posted on Nov 02, 2009 | | User: usedbooks | | 5 | I wonder if it's swift and painless like anesthetics or long and painful like rat poison... Eh, either way, it's better than death by religious fanaticism. -- Not that he died, this being a flashback and all ;-), but it is certainly an interesting insight.
Kudos on the green and red accents in the grayscale! -Posted on Nov 02, 2009 |
