So ... you wanted to know what had happened to Becky, eh?!

This, as we'll tell you on the next page, is the area known as "The Fringes", a buffer zone between our world and the Spirit World. (You may remember that, although we didn't see it then, Starflower entered the Fringes back in Chapter 11, when she was trying to contact the Shaman. Now you know exactly how brave she was being!

Amazing landscapes, movement of text, and thought...She's amazingly calm given the last question she asked there.

I say it every time, but dang if i don't just love the splash pages at the beginning of every chapter! This one is especially awesome and.. kinda freaky! Reminds me of cover art for an HP Lovecraft book.... spooky!

I can't help but add to the "great surreal landscape" comments. I particularly like the man-rock-thing with the dozen arms.

Or Rockman... chuckle.

Winnie: I think it's like leaves in Autumn. All it takes is a little breeze and they all gather up in neat piles around the nearest tree. Or, in this case, the nearest rock shaped like a big, pointy head!

Harry/Slide/Lamiah: Me, too! I deliberately held back our glimpse of "the Fringes" for as long as possible. When I see the terrific job that Nickel and Qoiri have done on it though, I have to wonder whether that was a wise decision! See also the response to the comments from Repoman and Darwin (way down there at the bottom!)

Any reference to Stonehenge makes me think of "This Is Spinal Tap", despite the fact that Stonehenge itself has been around much, much longer...

Forgive the oxymoron, but that is one wonderful wasteland in looks -beautifully drawn - the skulls were a nice touch. Though, now that I think about it, is there, like, a skull sweeper - one who makes sure they all land/get thrown in one place?

Ghost: It is indeed! Double portions of kudos to Nickel and Qoiri for this one!

jgib: It is nice to see Becky again, isn't it? Although, if ever there was a right time to use it, the phrase "What's a nice girl like you doing in a place like this?" does seem rather appropriate just now!

Cyberdog: Heh - it's taken us a long time to get here, but we've been talking about the spirit world since Chapter 3, so hopefully eveyone feels right at home!

usedbooks: Actually, the sheet is a matter of much controversy between me, myself and I! When we first see the Shaman naked, it's explained that "clothes cannot pass with him into the spirit world". In the early drafts of the script, therefore, Becky was also completely naked in this sequence.

If Harsho had drawn the Shaman "fully exposed" in those early scenes, Becky would definitely have been naked too. The book would have been categorised as "Mature" or "Adult" but it would have been consistent, so I'd have been happy with that. However, since Harsho tastefully kept all the Shaman's naughty bits hidden, the book has been Teen-rated up until now, and - rather than tip it into the "Mature" or "Adult" category at this very late stage in the story - I eventually decided we should cover her up!

In terms of the story, I can justify allowing her a sheet because Becky is in "the Fringes", not in the actual spirit world itself. Nevertheless, it still smacks of self-censorship and so I do have moments when I get very cross with myself!

And, yes, "mostly dead" is about right!

Trevor: Think of it as a theme park. You know ... for the really sick and twisted!

I love to see creepy planescapes of other dimensions/worlds.

She should be thankful to have a sheet... and a body. You really never know how "naked" you might be when traveling to foreign dimensions without a passport.

If the previous page is an indicator, she'll have plenty of company soon.

@CoyoteLongshot: I would call her *mostly* dead. We need Billy Crystal!

Comedian: Blame me. I've been exaggerating those rumours for simply aaages!

Khard: Wouldn't we all?! But, if you're the sort of person who stands up to a lightning-wielding super villain, I suppose you're better equipped to take such things in your stride than the rest of us. Especially if you can convince yourself it really is a dream!

Adam: Someone compared the Shaman to Doctor Strange, way back when we first met him (Chapter 3, maybe?) Not sure if that was you, but I'm glad we could bring back such happy memories anyway!

Lance: That it is!

Tantz: Heh - so now you're expecting a warped version of Clarence the Angel to appear, eh? Clarence the Demon, maybe?

Midge: I'm pleased we could make your day. Extremely worried about your mental health, but otherwise very pleased! ;-)

Hero/Toughy: Thanks, guys!

Azu: So, I take it you won't be booking your holiday there next year, then?

Alana: No, just her spirit. We'll see what's been happening to her physical body in just a short while!

Albone: Paranoia can be very healthy. Like many other fears, it can keep us alive!

Peipei: Ah, you never lost faith! Although, when you're not dead, being "where all the dead people go when they die" might not be such a good thing!

Popen: Oh, I think it's probably safe to say she's in more trouble than you thought! ;-) But, of course, the two things are not mutally exclusive!

Flup: This is as surreal as we get in Shades. Well, we wouldn't want to stray too far from reality now, would we?!

Coyote: As with the more extreme villains (like Thrawn!), this is all part of the "getting wilder" aspect that I've been promising since the beginning! I did consider letting us see into the Fringes earlier but decided to keep it back. Hopefully it has more impact coming at this stage, and maybe even seems a little more "credible" (?) following on from all the real-world scenes that have been leading up to it.

As for Becky's chances of escape, the difference here is that Starflower's spirit passed into the Fringes knowingly. Poor Becky just hasn't got a clue where she is or what's happening!

Lem: Heh - I suspect even he might be a little disoriented here!

Doc: It's great, isn't it? Bears very little resemblance to my original vision (see response to comments from Repoman and Darwin, below) but that's because it's about 53 times better than anything I'd dreamed up for it!

Wow! I daresay this is the most surreal environment we've seen so far. I love the stone arm-tree thing. Very unsettling.

So Becky isn't dead, she's just... half dead. If Starflower is able to get safely out of the Fringes, then looks like there's some hope for her yet...

SoItBegins: Nope - not exactly. But, she's well on the way! (More on this on the very next page!)

Repo/Darwin: When I first imagined the Fringes, I had in mind a very bright area. Partly to make things easy for the artist, it was almost a void with just a few weird objects floating around. Well, as you can see, Nickel doesn't do easy! Instead he sent me this wonderful landscape which takes me right back to the days of Roger Dean's gorgeous artwork for all those Yes album covers!

Even then, I still imagined everything to be very bright, maybe a little psychedelic and trippy ... And I continued to imagine that, right up until Qoiri sent me the flats for this page! As soon as I saw this, I immediately knew he was right and that "dark and sombre" was the way to go!

Which just goes to prove that sometimes the art team knows far more about a writer's world than the writer does!
