As we watch Jake about to stuff his foot in his mouth once more, I want to make an apology to my British Readers concerning my comment yesterday. Truly, I like the British People--I loved living in England and all the wonderful folk I met there. But I was a young American lad, pretty much like Jake--all brash and rough edged. We troopies stationed in Great Britain both loved and hated our roles there...and as Americans, we were blind to the actual reality in GB at the time. We didn't understand all the British resentment--and of course we resented right back--thus the mean tee-shirt.
Hindsight and maturity has opened my eyes quite a bit. Think about this as USA people. How would we feel if foreign troops from a major superpower waaayyy bigger than us were stationing their troops on our soil and paying them better than we make--with tax free PX perqs thrown in. Now here you are, a young American lad, you've grown up on the block, and you've had this long standing 'understanding' with the neighbor girl you grew up with--only suddenly she's all agog over the Foreign Troopers with their nifty uniforms and their money and their 'exotic' lives... Yeah...it would suck royal!
So I apologize for the tee-shirt, and any hard feelings I may have engendered in you blokes...because, yes...I dated a few British girls in my time....Sorry!

My uncle was in an English pub (a few pint into the evening) and got into it with a local. The Brit made some comment about "You Yanks need to remember who started your country." My uncle's response, "If it wasn't for us Yanks, you'd all be speaking German right now!"
Don't mess with my uncle when he's been drinking.

Oh, by the way, I loaded in a map of Monhegan Island with photo inserts of interesting places along Rebekah's walking route on the "Extra's" Site. It is a rather large image file, but it is kinda cool and it shows in ways words cannot, how the story is unfolding. Check it out
