Congrats! Great series, and I can't wait for the next. I'd love to see this in print, but you're already working on it, aren't you...? :-)

(Oh, and speaking of the print version, I should point out a typo on pg. 24 of this chapter: it's "too high-tech".)

I don't really know what else to say, this chapter pretty much met my high expectations. My only hope for the future is that the ongoing Relik will explore everything that's come before, and hopefully take more time with it than these five issues did. It was a very strong narrative, but I'd just love to see some side-plots which are equally strong. I feel what really makes a story like this, which is rooted in such a self-referential genre, where it seems everything has been done before and a big part of the fun is seeing it all again - how a writer pulls off the same thing that's been done before, but makes it seem fresh and exciting -, stand apart is what happens on the sidelines.

So far, the writing had a pretty "classic" sort of voice, it reminded me of the comics of yesteryear (or -decades), definitely pre-90s dark age testosterone doomsday apocalypse stuff. There's fun and irony and self-referentiality (if that's a word). The idea about these sorts of narratives is that everything has to be mentioned on screen, and I found that's the way it was done: all the technical details are found in the dialogues. This depends on everybody asking the right questions at the right times (and equally getting the right answers).

My point is (and it's a blunt point at that): That never happens in real life. We never get all of the details right away. And we never really listen to one another and answer their questions straight away.

So that's one thing that gets more attention in "modern" writing, and which I personally find to be a good thing.

Okay, those were two relatively small, and hopefully constructive points concerning the writing. Make no mistake, they also depend on taste and are highly subjective (and many might disagree with me here). This is just something I had to think of several times when reading Retake. And to make it clear, I don't really want to argue about how "natural" a comic about some pretty outlandish things should feel.

The fact that these points might be a bit far-fetched also goes to show that overall I enjoyed the comic very much and really have to look closely in order to critique anything in a meaningful way.

Oh, and it's great to see Dan improve from great to awesome.

Congrats! Reaching an ending (even if it's now going to be a temporary one only!) gives a huge sense of achievement. Well done!

Juvenile_Jay, seventy2, Zephyrion, legacyhero, Blue_jay, Emmzee, trevoramueller, melsr007, cryberdog, SlideStudios and leeuwen12: Thanks to you all!

Nepath: Thanks man, glad you continue to love the comic to this day. And since I already know you love Issue 1 of Relik - he's drawing it, folks, whilst Dan prepares for fatherhood! - I can't wait to get started!

fukujinzuke: Y'know, I'd totally forgotten Relik was set to be a core member of the Heroes Alliance!

Khard12: Hahah! Hadn't thought of that, either! Don't forget, now!

AzuJOD: I may just have to steal that from you...and I know just how to write it, too...!

Thanks again, one and all!

Oh, and I ran out of space to add this, but another very special person deserves to be recognised...

To Misha, my muse and lovely grammar-wolf! Without your loving support and enthusiasm Retake, and Relik, would also probably be a lot worse off. I'll owe you more than you'll ever know. I love you,

Dave

Well done to both of you!

Also, Relik leaving with Graxis would be a good 'What if' story.

Comic Description

Brad Stone goes from movie-hero to the real thing overnight, and quickly discovers the consequences - and risks - that come with his newfound abilties, and that nothing, not even victory, is guaranteed when there are no 'retakes.'

Comic Blog

Okay, so the blog was short-lived...maybe I'll come back to it when I have more time for internet access. Right now I'm extremely lucky to get to a computer long enough to type up an issue bit-by-bit, let alone a journal entry here and there! So for now you can all forget it existed...

...What do you mean "I had no idea it existed in the first place"?!

.....Philistines...

Dave.
