Oh, yeah--Mona is way cute.

Poor girl. Unless the way for a man to survive seeing the Gorgon is _never never look away._ Then if she gets a boyfriend she likes, she knows he is hers forever. Or else...

Also it seems women are immune, or Pilli would be a statue by now.

I sorta saw it coming--Mona is looking _more and more_ Gorgonish--her hair used to just end in knobs, looked like curls, but just lately we've been seeing them with open mouths.

Guess it's a puberty thing, like with Carrie, and Mona is a late, slow bloomer.

This might explain why the boy got a while to get a look, then _after_ Paco pulled his face away and he wasn't looking any more, he _then_ turned to stone.

Or--maybe--it isn't looking at the Gorgon that makes a man turn to stone--it's being forced to look _away!_

I could go on for pages about how many of the "monsters" of the Greek myths were actually Goddesses in earlier myth.

I once saw an Etruscan funeral statue at the Getty Museum. It has the man who is buried in the tomb sitting up from his grave, in his grave wrappings, listening, with a beautiful, peaceful expression, to the Siren (winged woman, with bird feet) singing at his feet. In the Odyessey of course it is fatal to listen to the Sirens, because their song is so alluring, they lure ships to get wrecked on the rock island they live on. But apparently it is OK to listen to the Sirens after you are dead--in fact it is kind of like being in Heaven.

I've heard other theories about what the Medusa head represents that I would be embarrased to write here, that I think backs all this up.

BTW--just because Mona and her mother are Gorgons does not mean they are "Greek." The Greeks told stories about Gorgons, but they set them far from Greece--around the Black Sea, I think. Mona could be Ukranian or Romanian or Bulgarian. (Or Turkish, but algeya said "European," so...
