Convention Season is coming! Looks like I’ll be at Chibi Chibi Con next month, Emerald City and Sakuracon in March and Stumptown (with Emma Capps!) in April!
- So back before the end of the year I read a review of Modest Medusa. The review was pretty fair, but the guy really didn’t like my art and described it as lazy. Sigh… sometimes I can be lazy, especially if I’m in a hurry. Then, about two weeks ago while I was at Newcon I met someone after my panel who told me that I had no business being on a webcomics panel because I clearly didn’t know how to draw at all, and my comic was one of the worst out there. That hurt. Finally, last week I discovered a webcomics review site that had some negative things to say about my comic. Some of them were really pretty valid, like criticsim about the poor site design and the number of adds (and I’m working with a friend to change both of those things). And again, they didn’t like the art.
So…
I thought I’d really push myself on this story arc and do the best pages I can do. Which is why they’ve been taking longer than normal. I’m really happy with the way they’ve turned out and I hope you like them as well. I’m not fishing for compliments here. Instead, my plan for this year is to bring my ” A game” to every Modest Medusa page.
What the hell? your art are just fine for me. it is nice to the eyes for sure. i feel good to look at your art. the guy must be very bitter and dislikes anything "relaxed" art. It is the readers that are important not the critics.
I like your style. It's fun and has it's own energy. But there is nothing wrong with wanting to do your best. If a few not so stellar reviews inspire you then go for it. Just as long as you are happy and I get to see more of your work the world is a good place.
The best way to deal with critics is to ignore them. Those who can't do, criticize. You need make no apologies for your artwork, scripting and story lines, they're just fine. I'm an author and believe me, you develop a hide like a rhino real quick against the slings and arrows directed at you by trolls. Keep on with what you're doing and I'll continue reading. Good luck.

apparently they don't like art styles that aren't like DC Comics or Marvel. Criticism is good, but complaining about a art style (unless you actually can't tell what the hell's going on, which is something very few comics have a issue with) is a pretty dickish thing to do.
Geez. That's some harsh criticism. Kudos to you for sticking to your webcomic. I mean, yes, I've seen webcomics with more extensive artwork, but I've also seen plenty with worse. Your artwork is definitely some of the better variety. It's definitely not lazy. Lazy is mouthing off to an artist about their work when you yourself don't have anything of your own to compare it to. Keep at it, and let the haters hate. You've got a good comic going here.
It's really cool that you're able to take such cutting remarks from nay sayers, and then turn around and work harder. You're a reliable and entertaining comic maker, and that's why I keep coming back. :)
Hope I can make it out to one of these cons (never been to one before) so I can say hey in person. I live pretty close!

Those critics are full of themselves. Your art style was what drew myself to the comic in the first place.

I've always liked your web comic and the art too, so, the heck with those critics anyway. Good for you for turning it into a positive thing!

Normally I would say living with a Medusa would be stupid but then again Jake dose it and he's fine.
