I think part of the hiccup is that the US audience isn't familiar with the Greek culture- and even though you give a ton of helpful insights, it is still foreign, and therefore, more likely to be taken harshly. I rather enjoyed the villains, and while I had issues connecting with certain members of the resistance, I think that the mood really works well with it.

one of my pet hates is when characters are spelled out in annoying detail when you first meet them. Meet Superpowerman 3000, he's big strong and moody, but has a softspot for 13 year old jewish girls with freckles. trifle is his favourite food and he always delivers a pithy one liner with EVERY punch. he has 9 O levels and 24 A levels and graduated with honours at oxvard university.

i also think that alot of these characters take some reading between the lines. this isnt a story where you're given alot of background on them, you have what's in front of you. but you do get a sense of some kind of context for these people and their character and i think it creates it's own intruige, like with the Nazi Arthur and his friend and how they interact, along with the resistence members and their difference in approach to certain things, and for me that creates a certain interest to see WHY that character acts like that. i have a leg up because i do happen to know that alot of these things will tie in together at one point or another, so that's my bias or insight. but i think if you can appreciate it as an intertwining plot that gradually becomes exposed instead of just delivering these things more abruptly then WM is a story more for you, than where if you're not such a fan of that approach, you'll find it harder to keep up with it.

Genejoke: That's fair enough I guess :) Could there also be a reluctance to connect with them considering they COULD be cannon fodder, or this could turn out to be one of those stories where everyone dies in horrible ways? When immersed in an environment like the one in WM, can you afford to really connect with anyone that might be dead by nightfall?

@Tantz, I know exactly what you mean, hence Stavlovs reply at the end of the page. the comic isn't about fun and charismatic people giving one liners at every opportunity. That said I didn't find it as easy to connect with the characters personalities as easily as I did their plight. this page of the review seems less focused that the other ones, there were a lot of points made that crisscrossed each other and it was harder to focus it and keep the comments true to those who made them in the first place. @Bravo, it's amazing the bonds a shared experience can forge and the barriers it can break down. As you say those people tend to grow on yo over time, familiarity rather than attraction I guess.

Not likable? I have hung out with people similar to many in the comic and they grow on you with time. When you don't have the leisure of picking your friends it will surprise you the people you end up liking and being with whether it's the invasion of Iraq, Fort Knox or Asbury Park NJ.

None of the WM are likeable to you? Aw, that's too bad :( Part of that I suppose might be cultural but I think it ties in to what you said earlier that as a modern reader you find the context and situation these characters find themselves in almost alien. Ergo I suppose that the way any character would REALISTICALLY act within that context and these conditions would render that character alien or distant to you as a modern reader as well. It is VERY true that none of them can have a full range of reactions that would be there if they were at peace time OR during a war time that did not involve actual invasion and occupation of the land they spend their daily lives on. So maybe because I decided to keep the WM characters very very true to how people did act and react back then, you get this effect especially if you aren't famiiar (culturally or otherwise) with these circumstances.
