How can he know that guy if he needs a hotel eh? If he knew him then he would have to live in the city somewhere, or live somewhere at all, OR have someplace to stay, like his friends house.
And if he had any of the above then he would have a place to stay.
UNLESS it is some extremely complicated matter that you could've explained.
