That's gotta hurt. Yup. Gonna get messy. Hey! Dude, that's not an easy spot to preen!
One thing I had to think about a while was how Kurach tended their feathers. Birds use their beaks to zip the barbules together and have a gland just above their tail to help maintain their feathers.
However tedious, Kurach use their claws to lock their barbs together. Their preen gland? They have two. One below each set of those feathers that stick out of their shoulders.

They may be fantasy critters, but it's still fun to make them as realistic as possible. ;)
