"Protected by Law" is the operative term here. Anyone who's read their history has heard many times that Sappho ran a Thiasos...but most people don't know what a thiasos really is.
Wikipedia defines it really well..."More generally, thiasoi were any of the numerous worship cults of Ancient Greece whose existences were protected by law."
