Well now...are we to chapter three finally? Holy crap. Kinda a let down after the length of chapter one, huh? I don't know how long each of these chapters is going to be, but they should be at least ten pages depending on chapter content of the story.
"The Story of His Life" is a look at Steve Martin...
Of note about this cover is that everything in the background behind Steve is an event in his life, usually pivotal to his character.
Moving Clockwise...
The badge - Steve started his adult life training as a Sheriff for Concord County. You all remember Tiger's comment about swearing that Steve was a Cop in chapter one? Yeah...instinct served.
The darkest day in Steve's life of course was the accident that stole his legs from him and "killed" his brother. (long story that...)
The cute couple you see there? Yeah that's Steve and his fiance Cheryl. The cracks in the mirror represent the fact that Cheryl took her own life when told that Steve had been killed (Part of that long story above).
When Steve recovered from his accident, with new and shiny cybernetic legs, he began working as muscle for hire for the doctor who brought him back from the brink. He found himself in Hong Kong assisting the government there in trying to root out a problem with yakuza. He was captured and tortured because of it, losing yet more of his humanity to the technique...The wrapped head and candle were allusions to "A Candle in the Eternal Night," a chapter of Starting Over where Steve is given hope that he will once more be able to see and speak.
When he once again recovers (And after events in the story Forgotten Ties), Steve returns to the far east, this time Kuala Lumpur to get his revenge on the yakuza for what happened in Hong Kong. That is where he meets Maribel Cho...a Hong Kong native in KL for college. They start off on the rocks and it only gets more interesting from there...
While these images are only touched upon in this chapter...and another issue all together is discussed, each of these events have shaped Steve's view on the world.
He's been through hell, and it shows in his personality. I think that Steve is very much like David, personality wise...and it is one reason you will see that the two of them don't get along well.
If you would like to know more about Steve, I have started reposting his story: "Starting Over" Where you can see the basis for his attitude, and his relationship with Maribel whom we will meet in about three or four pages...
