I love when people say "That's cute" in a condescending sort of way. It's one of my favorites.

I'm having some growing pains with the way I designed Goldie's hair. The reason is that she's got these two giant tufts of hair sticking out, and as my style changes, I'm finding it increasingly difficult to deal with them. Yes, I've sabotaged myself. Business as usual.

Speaking of things that are awkward, by now it should be plainly obvious that Neo-Tartarus, the structure you saw back in the Ultra sub-story, is submerged in magma. I started shading it, and then it dawned on me that it shouldn't be shaded, since it's IN MOLTEN ROCK. Molten rock is, of course, incandescent. And, according to some 80s rock band, it's also extremely hot.

Technically, you shouldn't even be able to see it, so I just kind of fudged it and came up with something that sort of looks right. It's kind of like hearing sound in space when you're watching Star Wars. Just turn your brain off.

And last but not least, a superhero webcomic from the past is back on the internet. Liberty The American Girl has a new home over at liberty.darktouch.net. If you want to see where the Gizmo Bug comes from, now is your opportunity.

Al's right. The joke was that Goldie is getting her science facts from an 80s hair band. ...because that IS the reason the album is named such.

I didn't even bother fact checking. It doesn't matter if it's right. In fact, it was almost entire dependent on her being absolutely wrong.

Remember, it's GOLDIE who's telling us the temperature outside...and Goldie's many things, but a keen intellect she's NOT. Probably LB's guess that Goldie got that temperature from a Bon Jovi album is right on the mark.

Your magma temperature is a tad high. 1400-2400 F is about the range, depending on the minerals involved. A page on the temperature of magmas (in Celsius) can be found at http://tinyurl.com/yjqzeqx .

7600F is higher than the melting point of tungsten, the highest-melting element on the periodic chart. At 5909 F, silicon, which makes up most rock, *boils* -- that is, turns to a gaseous vapor. Tartarus would be in a veritable pressure-cooker of superheated rock vapor. I don't think you're going to enter it through a volcano, because that caldera would explode in a Krakatoa-sized eruption if you tried.

I also agree about the liquid nitrogen. Cool it off to reasonable magma temperatures, and you can use liquid-sodium and tungsten-dust heat tubes to wick away the heat, where you pump it into other universes. Otherwise, anything you tried to put against 7600 F would just melt. Or, like Al said, use some kind of energy field to absorb the heat and move it around.

But your magma's still too hot.

Ok, I get the 5's in the corner now. Never knew what those were before, and never noticed the "Rate This Page" at the bottom before. From now on, I'm going to include a rating *with* a comment, though. Maybe it's just me, but I think the blank spot looks funny.

The Lightbringer's options seem fleeting,
And protagonist hope seems retreating,
But I do think I'm right,
Isn't heat just hot light?
Can't LB use that infra-red heating?

Actually, having liquid nitrogen pipes wouldn't really do you any good. If the nitrogen is sealed in pipes then it would be the same temperature as everything around it; it's when the nitrogen is released and allowed to expand to its gaseous form that it cools. Liquid nitrogen tanks that gradually release the pressurised gas inside would be useful in a vehicle like this but simply having it circulate in pipes isn't going to help at all.

When I update Dasien again, you can do a dirty limerick there. It's M-rated, after all.

See those 5s in the upper right corner of the posts? They're rating this page of the comic. If you want to rate a comic page yourself, use the dropdown menu below the comment field.

Oh, and welcome to Drunk Duck. ;)

Okay, this may be a really dumb question...but what's with all the #$#$%# empty posts? They're really annoying. More annoying even than people shouting "first post!"

If you don't have anything to say, why not just NOT POST ANYTHING? Or am I missing some new, fantastical meme?

"Abandon all hope ye who enter here."

Man, I wish I would have inserted that line somewhere. Even though it's totally cliche and everyone's done it. It's so appropriate.

Maybe I'll sneak it in later, George Lucas style.

Absolutely. Sometimes, you just have to default to Star Wars logic. And when that fails, Transformers logic.

PROBABLY there's a field---if only because it's hard to imagine any material that would stay solid under that much pressure, never mind the heat...but I deliberately did not overthink the outside of the prison. So could be.

Is the Lava flush against the structure walls? Or is there a energy field layered between them. Because depending on the distance of the field from the structure, and the color and opacity of the energy, there could still be some light effects on the prison.

Maybe, I dunno. I have no idea what i'm talking about. I always thought coloring was the hardest part of making a comic.

And coincidentally, most people don't realize that Tartarus is listed as an actually existing sub-dimension in Judeo-Christian New Testament Scripture from which a horde of insectoid demonics will be released (or some such end of the world types). And I didn't even learn that on Wikipedia! lol

Alschroeder, actually I'm very glad for several reasons for your comment. Not only is the idea of a hell-themed SSOSV's HQ in parallel of the JLA's satellite in the heavens a completely awesome-sauce idea, but you've also explained to me (unless you're information is incorrect too) the baffling question of why hell is called hades in NT Scripture when I have friends who claim that Hades is not a place in Greek mythology but instead the ruler or something of the Greek underworld. Because I'm fairly certain it is a place. At least apart from Disney's character Hades. But I'm rusty on my Greek Mythology. Anyway, you also helped expand my understanding of Tartarus. Therefore I understand since the NT Scripture uses Greek Mythology's Hades as a parallel to explain their own version, therefore I now have an expanded understanding of what Tartarus is within Christianity. It's not separate from Hades, but instead like you said the worst and deepest place of Hades. It also puts emphasis on what the writer of Revelation meant when he said those things were going to be released from Tartarus. But you didn't know you were going to give someone a religious epiphany today, did you?

I crack me up, lol

Darkbringer is smiling because if LB tries to escape, he burns to death in a second, or gets crushed by the immense pressure down there.

I conceived this particular prison/HQ a while ago, mainly because I always thought the Injustice Society's satellite on the other side of the Earth from the JLA's satellite was dorky. What they needed was someplace thematically located in Hell, as the JLA satelite was in the Heavens. A place almost impossible to reach, and more importantly, impossible to escape from. That's when I conceived of a HQ for the Secret Society of Super-Villains towards the center of the Earth. The only ones who could even get near them is Superman or Green Lantern (and the second depends on whether there are any yellow lava streams around them.)

It was an idea I always liked. So when we decided where to put Smiley's prison...I immediately thought of my old idea of where to put the SSOSV's HQ. It makes it almost impossible to escape from. Even if you stage a prison break--where do you go? There are hundreds of miles of hot magma between you and the surface.

Tartarus was the deepest and part of the Greek Hades, where the worst people or entities the Olympians wanted to punish went, by the way.
