Leon is the eldest child from middle class family in Ciudad de Reyes, the capital of a XVIIIth century Spanish colony. He has many annoying siblings and a mother who is determined to see him married off to the girl of her choice, Catherine. However, he has already fallen for Arlo. He makes a deal with his friend Mint, a girl with a similar problem, and they tell their families they are secretly engaged. But things get complicated for Leon when his ex-lover Bastian returns to the city and tries to rekindle their relationship. An easygoing guy who tends to let life happen to him, he struggles to cope with conflicting feelings.
	Arlo had a lonely childhood because he was raised in the palace by the ruling family of the colony, surrounded by an adult world of politics rather than playmates. He channeled his energy into learning how to duel. After his family moved back to Spain, he returned to the New World when he turned seventeen to escape their overbearing influence, but he remains shy and unsure of himself. He falls in love with Leon after they meet by chance, but their relationship is strained by the return of Bastian.
	Bastian was Leon's first love, until he left Ciudad de Reyes to go with his family to a mission post in the jungle. There they worked to educate native South Americans and protect them from violence and enslavement by other Europeans. He returns to the city with his assistant to steal money and valuables for financing his family's humanitarian activities, and to get back together with Leon and convince him to join his cause. However, he is thwarted in both missions by Arlo, the only person in the city who can match Bastian's skill with a sword.
	Aura is Bastian's female assistant, but in her disguise is easily mistaken for a boy. She has been in unrequited love with Bastian for a long time, and struggles with disappointment and jealous rage when she learns that he plays for the other team. At first she is determined to murder Leon, but then decides to help him.
	Mint (María Asunción) is a gorgeous and strong-willed young woman from an aristocratic colonial family. She has a romantic relationship with her maid, Margarita, but agrees to a fake engagement with Leon to hide both of their true feelings, which would offend their families and get them into trouble with the Inquisition. She likes hunting and guns in general, scheming, and extravagant clothes.
	Cinnamon (María Concepción) is Mint's evil twin sister and her exact opposite. She is bossy, obsessed with status and appearances, manipulative, and nosy. So far, her attempts to figure out what's really going on and turn her sister into a good girl have not succeeded, but who knows what she has up her sleeve?
	Catherine was Leon's mother's choice for his fiance, and as was expected of her, she fell in love with him before even meeting him. But Mint's ploy decieves her into thinking that Leon is already taken. She then tries to date Arlo... As you can see, Catherine is one of those unlucky girls that always falls for gay guys.
	Bruno has many adventures after arriving penniless in the New World. He accidentally sleeps with a very confused Leon, gets himself and another young merchant named Bernardo arrested by corrupt guards, escapes from a bizarrely perky High Inquisitor, almost gets shot by Mint, tries to con money away from Catherine by pretending to be able to make Leon love her, and moves in with Bernardo against his will while shamelessly trying to get in his pants.
	Bernardo is a native South American by heritage, a convert to Catholicism determined to make an honest, civilized life for himself in the city. He has the misfortune of meeting Bruno, who ruins his business, takes every opportunity to get him naked, wheedles into his home, and tries to destroy his spiritual purity.
