| | trevoramueller | I went to see Transformers 1 and 2, so I also blame myself in helping the germinate the abomination that is Transformers 2. I won't even go into details about how bad the flick is, nor will I probably end up reviewing the movie - better websites than this have already beaten me to it and anything that I had to say would just be redundant at this point. So instead of making fun of Bay, Shai, or the fact that there was no plot in this movie and that it contradicted not only itself, but the first movie several times (did they say that Optimus and Megatron were brothers, but then in this movie they claim that Optimus is the last Prime...which, to me, sounded like a different race of Transformers, but they never really explain it).
No, instead I decided to make fun of the movie-goer. And perhaps a little too harshly, but I assure you that my rants are intended to be done all in good fun.
But there's a lot of truth in this rant as well. The all-powerful dollar does hold a lot of weight in Hollywood, and what people pay to go see helps determine what kind of movies will be made. We, the people, dictate the kind and level of entertainment / quality that is within our movies - or we continue to feed the current machine, which allows movies like this to get made.
I have little doubt that there will be a Transformers 3, and that it too will be god-awful. The movie made almost as much as The Dark Knight in its opening weekend...and The Dark Knight was a good movie! So where's the disconnect? How does a terrible movie and a good movie make almost the same amount of cash?
If you were insulted by today's comic, then I apologize that you identified so strongly with the type of stereotype that I was speaking out against. Perhaps you would benefit from re-evaluating your entertainment choices, or just pop 2Fast 2Furious back into the ol' DVD player and relive your glory days vicariously through Paul Walker's attempts at "acting."
Meanwhile, the rest of us should demand better from our movies. It's not like this couldn't be seen a thousand miles away. Ignoring the fact that the first Transformers was terrible, Michael Bay made Bad Boys 2! Where Florida cops invade Cuba to stop the bad guys! Since when do Florida cops have authority in Cuba!?!
Michael Bay needs to go back to directing Playboy movies, and the rest of us need to demand that Hollywood make better movies. Period.
But I digress, what did you think of Transformers 2? -Posted on Jul 01, 2009 | | User: trevoramueller | | | Freegurt: I was a fan of the animated flick even as a little kid, and I used to be able to quote it from any scene to any scene (yeah, I'm that big of a nerd). I wasn't a fan of either Transformers live-action flick, obviously, but I do exaggerate my dislike for it in the comic.
kyupol: I spent most of the movie trying to figure out what the story was, and why they were doing what they were doing....to this day, I still can't figure it out. -Posted on Oct 07, 2009 | | User: Freegurt | | | I liked all the Transformer movies. Both live action (though I liked the first better) and the animated one.
Though I do think they should have named the second one 'Sam And Two Ugly Robots With That Other Guy and Megan Fox's Fine Boobs'. I wanted moar Bee and Prime. D:
Anyway, your rant still got me to laugh, lololz. -Posted on Jul 17, 2009 | | User: kyupol | | 5 | | transformers... I love the action in that show but story is kinda so-so to me. -Posted on Jul 10, 2009 | | User: trevoramueller | | | | ttyler: The secret's out, sir. This rant was all about you! :P -Posted on Jul 07, 2009 | | User: ttyler | | | | You sir, are cruel.....I paid you good money not to mention that. -Posted on Jul 07, 2009 | | User: trevoramueller | | | subcultured: You kind of get a scene like that, only instead of her getting it on with a Transformer a robot just humps her leg.
ttyler: Your ass is still numb from the length of the movie, or from that "woman" hooker in the parking lot? :P -Posted on Jul 06, 2009 | | User: ttyler | | 5 | | At least we had megan fox to look at for what seemed like 3 million hours. my ass is still numb, 2 weeks later...... -Posted on Jul 03, 2009 | | User: subcultured | | 5 | i just want to see megan fox get it on with a transformer.
where's my scene, huh?! HUH>!@!!! -Posted on Jul 02, 2009 | | User: trevoramueller | | | seventy2: Probably for the best, honestly. I'm going to poke fun at the movie on Friday, which should hopefully be more funny than this rant.
Steely Gaze: Even ignoring the lack of faith to the source material, Transformers 1 was a sloppy story that could've benefited from some hard editing and a plot that made sense. At what point are the Pentagon hackers (that are so great at their job, they have to take the code to some guy who lives with his mother in the burbs) necessary in that story? And the only purpose that the soldiers provide is because Sam can't operate a gun. It's just very very sloppy.
The cartoon was great at the time, but by todays standards is a very simple form of storytelling. Granted, every episode was pretty formula driven (bad guys have a plan, they attack, good guys try to stop them and one gets hurt, they retreat, fix the guy, and come back and win), but they had the rare treats that broke that mold (the Dinobots introduction, for instance).
In truth, some of that perspective may be skewed by my love of the source material. It's a known fact that the cartoons - and even these movies - are just giant expensive commercials for the toys and merchandise.
zaymac: Agreed on both counts. The only thing that Transformers 2 did was remind the old (and inform the new) generation of viewers that Optimus Prime is the biggest bad ass ever!
Druchii: My big thing about the flick was that they call Optimus the last of the Primes (and without saying what the Primes are, I assume a separate race within the Transformers) but in the first movie they said that Optimus and Megatron were brothers...in which case, wouldn't Megatron be a Prime too?
Star Trek was a superior movie in every sense, while Transformers 2 was sloppy and weak. Hell, Terminator 4 was better than this movie. -Posted on Jul 02, 2009 | | User: Druchii | | 5 | The ending seemed like a bit of deja vu for me. They were in the desert again. There were some technical oversights that bugged me more like LongHaul being in robot form fighting the Autobots and humans, yet, on the Pyramid, Devastator is still combined.
I usually go to these movies to see the effects, and HOPE the movie will be good. Star Trek was one that fulfilled both aspects for me. I do enjoy seeing the Transformers brought to life, but yes, the story was hurting bad. -Posted on Jul 02, 2009 | | User: zaymac | | 5 | | I know I should have been entertained by all the splosions'... But I'm sorry to report that I was just bored beyond belief by it. At least G.I. Joe will be good... (That was sarcasm). -Posted on Jul 01, 2009 | | User: Steely Gaze | | | @Trevor: Ah, I think I see what you mean.
I can dig that. I myself thought Transformers 1 was a silly, juvenile movie, but I enjoyed turning off my brain and being caught up in zillions of big explosions and robots. Now, I knew a large number of people that complained about the first film on the basis that it wasn't true to the cartoon.
Well I watched the cartoon growing up, and I've gotta say, it wasn't all that great. It was a mediocre cartoon with mediocre animation, average plotlines, and fairly solid voice work. How was it to be translated to the big screen? It was a kids show with a kid mind-set. And going in expecting that, I came out fairly pleased.
The thing I've never understood is how something that was aimed at children to begin with, and is basically aimed at them now, should be handled? I mean, I love the old GI Joe cartoon and movie dearly, but I would be the first to admit they were mediocre, even by kids standards.
I guess it depends on one's perspective to begin with. -Posted on Jul 01, 2009 | | User: seventy2 | | 5 | | haven't seen it yet. -Posted on Jul 01, 2009 | | User: trevoramueller | | | oldguy85: I wasn't planning to see it, either, but my buddy called me up and said he was curious. I suggested that we get drunk, go watch it, and rip it apart. It was a fun evening.
That venture does sound like fun. Let me know how it goes.
blntmaker: Soundwave was a satellite. He didn't do anything. He had like 2 lines. It would've been better if he were in it more, and the Twins were in it less....
harryq: Very true, and while my comic is meant to be taken in jest, there is some truth to it. I have little to no doubt that there will be a Transformers 3, after that opening weekend.
Steely Gaze: I know a lot of people who enjoyed Transformers 1 - but the interesting thing to me is that they then go and complain about Transformers 2. The same problems exist in both movies - and in fact, some different problems exist in the first one that many people either just chose to ignore or didn't recognize as problems. From a pure storytelling perspective, I've read better work from 12 year olds....
That said, many people found both movies entertaining, and I maintain that there's a big difference between quality and entertainment. I mean, I own Judge Dredd on DVD (I loved the production design, but admit that it was a piece of garbage), so we all have our guilty pleasures.
I just don't see the disconnect between T1 and T2, since they're both the same caliber of storytelling. That is to say, extremely low.
khard12: Thanks for reading!
Dark Pascual: Sure, but let's just maintain that there's a difference between quality and entertainment. While many people may find T2 entertaining, recognize that it's far from quality. "Sloppy" would be the word that I would use to describe it. :P
amanda: If you want giant robots and explosions, watch Robot Jox. If you want a Transformers movie, watch the animated flick (tons better). -Posted on Jul 01, 2009 | | User: amanda | | 5 | | Eh, I plan to see it anyway, but I do tend to agree with your points =D I just want to be distracted for a couple hours, and if I can accomplish that with giant robots and explosions, then all the better! Yay! -Posted on Jul 01, 2009 | | User: Dark Pascual | | 5 | If you payed for your ticket, you knew what you had coming...
I watched it. It wasn't a good movie, but it was a fun movie... -Posted on Jul 01, 2009 | | User: khard12 | | 5 | -Posted on Jul 01, 2009 | | User: Steely Gaze | | 5 | I actually watched Transformers 1 and I enjoyed it, I'll likely see the sequel when it comes out on DVD. I'll admit it, I found it to be a dorky, yet fun summer flick. But then, if I had any say, Steven Seagal would be allowed to go back and direct more of his environmental action flicks.
I make no excuses for my taste in movies. I like crappy old kung fu flicks from the '70s, Golan-Globus action epics from the '80s, direct-to-video thrillers from the '90s, and pretty much anything else. Does that mean these are "good" movies? No, no it does not. It merely means I enjoyed them.
Does Hollywood come out with a lot of stinkers? Yes, yes they do. But I seek to claim what fun I can from what I receive, or turn to alternate sources. Of course I also don't go to movie theaters, so I usually end up paying rather little for the film when it is released on DVD.
So while I admit my taste in movies may not be exceedingly impressive, I also can't admit to caring overly much. I like what I like, and can't really feel cheated by what I don't. -Posted on Jul 01, 2009 | | User: harryq | | | | Opinions, everyone has one. -Posted on Jul 01, 2009 | | User: blntmaker | | 5 | | It was a good movie - Soundwave was in it (With Frank Welker doing the voice) Operation...Coolness! -Posted on Jul 01, 2009 | | User: oldguy85 | | 5 | Not planning on seeing it. I participate in an online venture where hundreds of people including myself are producers and will also participate in the movies profits. Sound cool? We just approved a plot line and partial music.
It will be written professionally with producer input. -Posted on Jul 01, 2009 | Only registered members may vote. Sign up here! | |
