Ah backgrounds. I've been trying to work on my backgrounds more, especially in this story, because I always tell people that their comics could be better with them. Why not mine as well? Here we're introduced to yet another eccentric sales clerk AND another 12 year old.

The truth is, I already bought a pair of sunglasses for Laura the very first vacation that we took together. We went to Pokagon, which is a state park in Indiana, and there's an outlet mall up there with a Sunglass Hut. On clearance were some very nice polorized sunglasses. Laura was nervous about getting them, because (like me) she has a tendancy to break her sunglasses. However, to this day she still has them, and uses them exclusively - especially when driving.

I like to give practical gifts if I can help it, and not something that will just end up collecting dust. However, symbolic gifts can be fun too. What are some gifts that you've received over the years from friends or loved ones?

simonitro: I kind of based the guy off Johnny Bravo (only without the flexing). Good eye!

The sunglasses joke kinda reminded me of a Johnny Bravo joke.

Short_Circuiting: Yes, her shirt will actually have a new message on it every panel. I thought it was funny. I'm glad to hear that no one has ever gotten you anything strange or exotic. I remember one time my mother got me Batman Forever and Batman & Robin on VHS, because she thought I would like them. I mean, I like Batman, right? So why not. ;)

Warpedwenger: Thanks for reading!

amanda: The guy in the first panel is wearing a...turtle neck? Yes, that's the ticket. :P

I also enjoy the practical gift, which is why I usually ask for specific things, or just give me money. My mother just gives me a spending limit, and I go birthday and holiday shopping for myself - she then receives the gifts, wraps them, and I don't see them until the birthday / holiday. It's a good system.

lba: You had a great background in the latest update, with the flowers and stuff. Also, yes - you're the only person I know who owns a foam cow in their living room. I checked. :P

kyupol: Glad you enjoyed it! :D

GTLB: See, I think everything in the mall us "useless crap." But it's usually more expensive than $20, so that's a bargan! ;)

I think my favorite gift to this day was the back end of a foam cow someone gave me. totally impractical, but how many other people can say they've got a cow in their living room?

Backgrounds are a pain. I'm very slowly building up the courage to really tackle them.

Yay for backgrounds! Is that guy in panel 1 not wearing a shirt? What a silly person.

I much prefer functional gifts, but sometimes I like things that are more personal. My mom always asks what I want for birthdays/Christmas, etc, so I tell her things like "a vacuum" or "a wok." Parents = fantastic at the practical gifts thing.

Fitz: Yeah, I've noticed that 12 year olds look more adult these days. Also, I suck at drawing kids, so I made her a little "too adult?" The joke going on here is that 12 year olds are like Russian spies - you just can't tell who they are, or when they'll strike. ;P

harryq: Thanks for reading!

antcomics: Backgrounds are difficult, but they are very important. Your bowling alley illustrations were very powerful, well done, and stuck out among some of the best I've ever seen! My stuff is just trying to remind people where the characters and story are (ie: the first panel here they're no longer in the chocolate store, you can tell because there's other people and hallways). I'm trying to scrape by with my backgrounds here. ;)

kiandranishan: Backgrounds are difficult, I agree. Also, the 12 year old's shirt is going to change in the next page...it should be funny.

seventy2: Oh wow, a whole list to respond to:
1) Indiana is pretty cool, especially since their booze is cheaper and fireworks are legal there.
2) @$$hole! live was a hilarious concept, and I'm glad you found it. This comic is slowly turning into a Where's Waldo of sorts. ;)
3) Yeah, no kidding. Also, her shirt is going to change a lot on the next page. I think shirts with changing messages are funny.
4) I prefer it when someone makes me a gift, honestly. It shows that they put that extra time and effort into the gift and thinking about you. Laura likes to make me mixed CDs that chronicle the evolution of our relationship - and they'll excellent!

Backgrounds. Ugh. They're the hardest part about comics IMO. You have quite a challenge here too with a mall setting. I think you're creating enough of a 'mall feel' with yours, however. And I thought I had it hard with the bowling alley... :o)

Hmm, that's one adult-looking twelve-year-old! But Destiny's Child all lookked 25 when they were barely sixteen, so go figure :) Must be the climate!
As for nonpractical, symbolic gifts... My sis used to give me little statues of people... errr... removing by-products of metabolism from their bodies. I still have them. The statues, I mean.
